We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Probability Tutoring FAQ

Probability is a branch of mathematics with a number of important applications. Being able to calculate the chances of an event occurring or not occurring can help us make informed decisions on many levels. On a personal level, it can help us decide whether or not it is advisable to bring an umbrella to work based on weather data. On a group level, it can help determine how likely someone is to purchase a company's product after viewing an advertisement. On the level of national policy, it can help discover if additional online security measures are likely to reduce the instance of pirated data. While it may at first appear probability is an obscure field of study, it can actually be applied to most areas of life.

Probability informs daily lives in a variety of ways, but when initially learning basic probability students may become confused by its combination of the tangible and the theoretical. Early problems involving a certain number of objects in a bag may seem easy, but the application of various rules to the ways in which certain probabilities can be considered together may seem too abstract and overwhelming.

Final session. Today we reviewed for the student's final exam tomorrow. We covered her entire review packet. I left her a review sheet of the steps and some practice problems with the answers. She did well determining the slope and y-intercept using the provided graphs. She was easily able to set-up the triangle problems using SOHCAHTOA. Overall I can see an improvement in her abilities and thinking skills.

Today the student and I mainly worked on word problems and fractions. We worked on two- and three-step word problems that ranged from easy to quite difficult. Then we focused on adding fractions that had either mixed numbers or did not have common denominators. She struggled figuring out how to make denominators the same, so we will continue to work on this until she has a good grasp of it.

We went over the test and got started on a practice math test to see where she is. We worked through one section of the math test. We will switch over to the writing section next time! Great session.

We covered addition, subtraction, facts and fact families, D.O.L. Student is at or above grade level in everything I have worked with him on except particular kinds of mathematical reasoning (e.g. 7+20=27), and he is picking these up quickly.

The student needed help with a few questions from a review packet for her final exam, focusing on finding probability and basic statistics for given data. For the most part, she knew her stuff; she only really needed me to clarify a few points of confusion, most notably the method for finding expected value.

The student and I spent the first half of the session covering practice problems from her test prep book. These included geometry and consecutive number problems, which are similar to the types of problems on which we've worked previously. With a little guidance, she was able to understand and solve these problems. For the second half, we focused on probability - more specifically, independent vs dependent events. I gave her example problems and applications. She was able to gain a strong grasp on this material, and is ready for more advanced topics in probability and statistics.
