Calculus 3 Tutoring FAQ

Calculus 3 is the most advanced course in the typical calculus series. For many students, the content covered in this class represents a new type of mathematics. Not only does the coursework require students to graph equations in three dimensions and to solve formulas in multiple variables, but it is also the first time that many students will encounter vector spaces and subspaces. This can pose significant challenges to even the brightest of math students.

With the help of a personal Calculus 3 tutor, all of the advanced concepts of this upper-level calculus course can be explained at your own pace. A tutor can help you strengthen your understanding of all relevant topics, including the three-dimensional coordinate system, the dot product and cross product, equations of lines and planes in space, the arc length of a curve, differentiation and integration of vector functions, velocity and acceleration in three dimensions, and spherical and cylindrical coordinate systems.

We reviewed a few vector topics and then moved on to parameterized lines and curves in space. We looked at curvature and how to calculate it, then we talked about position, velocity, and acceleration.

The student and I worked on his homework involving double and triple integrals. We focused especially on double and triple integrals requiring conversions to polar coordinates. The most difficult part tends to be setting up the correct integral with the correct limits of integration.

We went through his quiz problems talking about what concepts and tricks should be applied in solving them. The problems involve dot and cross product of 3-dimensional vectors, as well as how vectors could be used in representing lines and planes in analytical geometry. We also went through his lecture notes from school and located the examples in them that were covered in the quiz. He is picking it up. I left the hints for the solutions with him.

This time we expanded on our first section, I was able to help her complete her homework before her class. The topics we covered were working with contours in order to find the derivative in one direction and how to find the derivative in one direction of a multivariable function. In addition to that, I went over details to describe how a level surface look by drawing. For instance, she was given an equation and told to break it down by choosing a direction as a constant, and to continue the discussion by choosing a cross-section as 0.

First exposure to "derivative" on R^m -> R^n functions. Reviewed "partial derivative" knowledge, generalized to "directional derivative". Most of our time was spent going over some proofs using first principles.

I met the student at the library today from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. We worked on reviewing for his midterm exam. In particular, we studied using dot and cross products to finds areas and volumes of parallelograms and parallelepipeds, calculation of work using line integration, vector spaces, basis and dimension of vector spaces, linear independence, and surface integrals. Our next meeting is tomorrow from 4:45 - 6:45 PM. We will continue with surface integrals, bases in matrix spaces, and the Frenet-Serret formulas.
