Paleontology Tutoring FAQ
The vast majority of life on Earth lived and died before humans were ever able to observe it. All we are left with are the imprints that the bones, feathers, and teeth of ancient living things left buried deep in the ground. Paleontology is the study of the remains of all the billions of years of life that passed before humans arrived on the scene. Paleontology tutoring can be the key to unlocking this amazing history, and Varsity Tutors can help you connect with an experienced paleontology tutor who can work with you to craft a plan to break down the wealth of information you are learning and make this material much easier for you to understand. This plan for understanding is where tutoring can really pay off. Lifelong learning is as much about forming good study habits as it is about learning particular bits of information. Skills learned in the course of paleontology tutoring can be used later in other classes or even after your formal schooling is completed. A paleontology tutor can help you learn these life-long skills.
Organization of materials, allotment of scarce study time, deciding what content to tackle first -- all of these are tutoring areas in which a well-trained professional can help you. A tutor can help with these quotidian tasks because they are themselves veterans of many of the finest academic institutions. They learned the material needed to do well in paleontology courses themselves as well as the skills needed to thrive under difficult circumstances. Part of the benefit of paleontology tutoring is the ability of a tutor to help you sift through the vast amount of material covered in a course and focus on what is really important for mastery of this broad subject. Paleontology is the overlap of geology, anatomy, ecology, and physics. A good paleontologist will need to know stratigraphy to understand the layering of rocks and how to compare decaying radioactive isotopes to discover the age of the rocks themselves. The identity of a fossil is often opaque to a layman or a beginner, but an experienced paleontologist will know which features are the most important in making an accurate identification. Much of that identification will rest on a sound understanding of animal anatomy and morphology. Despite challenges, scientists have a pretty good understanding of the ways in which many ancient animals, plants and ecosystems lived and worked, all due to the work of paleontologists over the years. As you learn the field, you will also have to cover all of this material. A paleontology tutor can make a profound difference in how well (and how rapidly) you learn. Recent Paleontology Tutoring Session Notes
On Wednesday the student and I finished reviewing her chapter 7 material (photosynthesis) along with chapter 6 (cellular respiration) for her upcoming exam over the two chapters. The big focus was the flow of electrons and comparing and contrasting the different aspects of CR vs. PSN. The student walked me through her notes that she had taken, which were very good, and she really had a good handle on the material once we went through it a couple of times. These chapters have a lot of tiny details that all come together in ways that are often very confusing for students, and so we worked on keeping the big picture in mind to aid in that process, which she did extremely well. I left her with some advice for studying (go through the diagrams and explain them aloud, go through the end of chapter questions, etc.) and I am confident she's going to do well on this exam, given her performance on her previous exam. She's working incredibly hard!
We reviewed some of the problems from his practice test and made sure he could solve for slope-intercept form given the coordinates of 2 points. We then focused most of the time on biology, preparing for his test Friday. We covered mitosis and meiosis, cell organelles, eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, bacteria cells, chromosomes, cell structures, DNA, photosynthesis, endocytosis and exocytosis, active and passive transport, and ATP. The student was a little rusty on meiosis and mitosis but otherwise knew the parts of the cell very well. He had the rest of his review to finish.
Today we worked on the dihybrid worksheet. Each problem entailed listing the two sets of traits being discussed - such as green/yellow and tall/short plants - then writing out the genotypes of the parents, and from there creating a dihybrid Punnett square with all 16 possibilities of offspring genotypes, and finally listing the ratio of phenotypes. The first problem took a considerable amount of time and teaching (45 minutes) which was fair given how many steps were required to attain the answer, and the amount of guidance and color-coding she needed to understand the problem. However she worked very hard, and became quicker and grew more confident with each problem. We will continue this worksheet at the next session.
The student has a Biology test coming up on Wednesday, so we are really focusing on making sure she is as prepared as possible. I gave her notes on three chapter sections by breaking them down and having her write the main ideas in an outline form. We also would pause to discuss certain key concepts, like natural selection, and vocabulary words so that I could ensure she was absorbing the material.
We talked about differences between liver and kidney function. We also discussed hypotonic vs. hypertonic solutions, metabolism on a body/nutrition level, impact of diet, regulation with insulin, and pancreatic function. Lastly, we discussed the impact of diabetes and insulin regulation.
