The bar exam is complex and will test your legal acumen and critical thinking skills in a number of ways, so why not let us find you a private mentor who can boost your confidence?
What is on the Ohio bar exam?
You'll have to pass the bar exam in order to practice law in Ohio. While the specifics of the test vary from one jurisdiction to another, Ohio has adopted the National Conference of Bar Examiners-developed Uniform Bar Examination, which allows you to transfer your scores to other jurisdictions that have also adopted the UBE. You'll also have to take the MPRE, or Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination, a shorter test that focuses on the ethical issues faced by legal practitioners and the disciplinary systems in place to regulate the legal industry. Registering for the bar exam in Ohio costs either $358 for early registration or $458 for late registration, so you'll want to go into the exam well-prepared in order to make good on your investment. We'll look at each component of the Ohio bar exam here, so you can get an idea of how the Ohio bar exam training that we can help you find can ready you for the test.
The first element of the UBE is the Multistate Bar Examination, or MBE. The MBE is a six-hour-long multiple-choice exam that will test your understanding of seven fields of legal practice: Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Real Property, and Torts. While reviewing all these topics in-depth before exam day may seem like a tall order, we can match you with an Ohio bar exam coach who can take a systematic approach to test prep, guiding you through each aspect of the MBE one at a time and helping you stay motivated. In Ohio, you'll also have to take a supplemental essay portion that will test your understanding of state-specific laws.
Next up is the Multistate Essay Examination, or MEE. As the name suggests, this is a written-response exam. You'll have to compose six essays, and you'll be allotted 30 minutes for each. The topics covered on the MEE are similar to those seen on the MBE, but here you may be asked to combine knowledge from several different fields of law and synthesize them into a single, cogent argument. Composing written work under pressure can be a challenge in any circumstances, and the pressure of the bar exam can raise the stakes. However, the Ohio bar exam tutors that we can connect you to can teach you how to quickly develop outlines for argumentative essays, so you can learn to test your arguments before committing yourself to the work that you will be scored on.
The last part of the UBE is the MPT, or Multistate Performance Test. This exam will ask you to complete two lawyering tasks intended to simulate the kind of work that you would perform in a real law office, should you pass the bar and go on to be a lawyer. You could be asked to draft a letter to opposing counsel, for instance, or put together a will for a client, or write a memo for a supervising attorney. In any case, you'll have access to two sets of documents: A "File" containing all the facts of the case in the form of client documents, newspaper excerpts, police reports, evidence, and so on; as well as a "Library" of legal statutes, rulings, and historical precedents. Although your File and Library will contain all the information needed to compose a well-researched report, you could discover that much of the material you've been given is irrelevant. A private instructor can give you advice on how to improve your rapid research skills, from active reading techniques that you can employ on the MPT to organizational methods that you can use to assemble your argument as you perform your research.
How can Ohio bar exam tutoring assist me as I get ready for the test?
The Ohio bar exam tutors that we can connect you with will work with you on a one-on-one basis, so they won't have to compromise your instruction in order to accede to the needs of other students. Considering the breadth of the bar exam it's to be expected that there could be some aspects of the test that you feel well-equipped for, and others that you're less confident about. A private tutor can develop a personalized curriculum that takes these strengths and weaknesses into account and uses your study time efficiently. If you need to spend some extra time brushing up on Family Law, for instance, your mentor can rearrange their study plan to suit you. Conversely, if you're an accomplished writer and don't see a need to practice for the MEE, your tutor can devote the time that you would have otherwise spent polishing your composition skills to another area where you need more assistance.
An Ohio bar exam coach can keep your individual learning preferences in mind when designing your lessons, too. If you're more of a visual learner, your mentor can supplement your lessons with visual aids. They can use decks of flashcards when helping you review legal terminology, and show you how to employ color-coding when developing your MEE essay outlines or organizing MPT research. If you're more of an aurally oriented student, on the other hand, your tutor can focus on lectures and discussion-based lessons. Regardless of your learning style, Ohio bar exam tutors can find teaching methods that work for you.
Although legal knowledge will be the primary focus of your test prep, the Ohio bar exam training that we can help you find can target your test-taking skills, too. Considering the length of the bar exam, your ability to stay calm and focused for extended periods of high-stakes testing can have an impact on your performance. Your bar exam mentor can give you advice on how to keep track of time during the six-hour MBE, to make sure you don't find yourself running out of time in the latter part of the test. They can also provide suggestions on how you can manage test anxiety, how you can quickly rule out incorrect answers, and more.
