If you are a new teaching candidate seeking a license to teach in Ohio, consider taking an OAE class offered by Varsity Tutors to help you prepare. The professional knowledge of candidates seeking an initial Ohio educator license or adding a new licensure area is assessed by the OAE licensure program. A tutor can help you improve your study and test-taking skills. If you think that working with a personal tutor in an OAE prep course can help you, then contact Varsity Tutors for more information.
Working with a tutor in an OAE course gives you the opportunity to work at your own pace to review material that you need extra assistance with. The instructor can assess your current skill set in the OAE class to identify where you need more work. Then the OAE prep class can be tailored to suit your specific needs.
The assessment that you need to take depends on the type of license you want. There are three OAE Assessment types including Pedagogical Knowledge Assessments, Foundations of Reading, and Content Knowledge Assessments. The following list gives more details on these assessment types.
OAE Assessment Types
- Pedagogical Knowledge Assessments
- Early Childhood (PK-3)
- Middle Childhood (4-9)
- Adolescence to Young Adult (7-12)
- Multi-Age (PK-12)
- Foundations of Reading
- Content Knowledge Assessments
- Art
- Biology
- Computer Information Science
- Early Childhood Education
- Family and Consumer Sciences
- Mathematics
- Music
- Physics
- Special Education
- etc.
The time allowed to complete this assessment is three hours. That may seem like a long time. However, you'll have three separate sections to work on. You'll need to answer both multiple choice questions and complete writing assignments. Taking OAE prep classes gives you the chance to take practice exams to see how well you know the material. Maybe you did well on the multiple choice questions but need more work on the two writing portions of the exam. The instructor can help you hone your focus during the OAE prep courses to improve your confidence for all aspects of the exam.
It helps to know that the test is timed and how long you have to complete it so you can plan out the length of time spent on each question and section. You may not have time to re-read every question, so taking several practice exams during the OAE courses can help you better prepare. The instructor can show you test-taking strategies that are specific to help you with the OAE exam. For example, one strategy may be how to eliminate several answer choices on the multiple-choice section, so you can finish that section in a timely manner without feeling too much pressure.
We try to match each student with a tutor that can be flexible with scheduling. You can meet your instructor anywhere through our Live Learning Platform, provided you have a stable internet connection.
For your first license, you are only required to complete one assessment of professional (pedagogical) knowledge. There are four exams under the Pedagogical Knowledge Assessments. The following bullet listing describes the exam breakdown for the Adolescence to Young Adult (7-12) Assessment.
Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Adolescence to Young Adult (7-12) Exam Breakdown
- Format
- Multiple Choice (100 items)
- Case Study (1 written assignment)
- Work Product (1 written assignment)
- Time Allowed: 3 Hours
- Passing Score: 220
If you're ready to prepare for the OAE by taking an OAE course, contact Varsity Tutors today. Our Educational Directors are available to explain the benefits of OAE classes and help you get started with the right tutor.

...it allows me to be creative with my lessons. I also enjoy working one on one with the students to see what makes them click. My students have the ability to express themselves in different ways than they do in the classroom. As for my attributes, I am patient, flexible and determined to teach students the lessons they need to learn. I look forward to working with families now and in the future.... To be an outstanding teacher, the goals of the classroom must be identified. The main goal will be for the students to achieve academic success. Having a guide for the students to reach that academic success in the schools is the first step. The next step is to identify what ways the students learn from in the most useful way. For example, looking at students to see if they learn by hearing or kinesthetically would be one of the first steps. The next step would be to look at the goals of the classroom. What would I like to see in my classroom for my students to succeed? The final step would be collaboration not only amongst other teachers in the classroom, but also by working with parents and others outside of the school to ensure student success.
