Varsity Tutors is the only name you need to know if you're interested in taking a great New York City USMLE prep course. The USMLE (an acronym for United States Medical Licensing Exam) is a series of three high-stakes tests required to practice medicine in this country. The USMLE is cumulative, meaning that you are expected to remember nearly everything you studied at The New York University School of Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College, Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, or another local medical school. If that's too much material to study on your own, there's nothing wrong with bringing in the experts to help you reach for your professional goals.
Your instructor will probably break your USMLE prep into each individual part, or "Step," to make it easier to study for. Step 1 covers core scientific topics such as the nervous system and the importance of blood and is generally taken following a student's second year of med school when such topics are freshest in your mind. Step 2 introduces some of the more practical clinical skills a doctor needs and is generally taken during your fourth year of medical school. Step 3 is saved until after you've graduated from medical school. Continue reading to learn more about how we can help you prepare for any or all of these exams.
What can I cover during a New York City USMLE course?
If you're preparing for Step 1, your instructor may concentrate on test-taking strategies to help you answer approximately 240 multiple-choice questions in the seven hours allotted. That may seem like a long time, but the questions are broken into 60-minute blocks that make time management an important skill on the exam. If you're ever unsure of an answer, it may be best to take a guess and move on instead of spending too long on a single item.
Step 2 is split into two distinct parts: Clinical Knowledge and Clinical Skills. While Clinical Knowledge uses a comparable format to Step 1, Clinical Skills is a practical test where you have to interact with patients in a controlled setting in order to evaluate your communication skills. After meeting each patient, you need to write up a quick "patient note" explaining your diagnosis to colleagues recommending follow-up care. If you have a hard time committing your thoughts to paper quickly, your instructor can show you how to sketch a quick outline to make it easier.
Step 3 is a mammoth exam administered over two days. Day 1 consists of six hours of multiple-choice questions comparable to Step 1 and Step 2: Clinical Knowledge, except that the topics covered include medical specializations such as pulmonology and family medicine instead of broader science. Day 2 has more of the same, plus 13 computer-based case simulations to measure how you react to realistic clinic scenarios. If you're apprehensive about the electronic interface on these simulations, your instructor can provide practice items to help you develop familiarity with it.
What are some of the advantages of taking a New York City USMLE course?
Each New York City USMLE class takes place on our exclusive Live Learning Platform, a mobile-friendly platform that allows you to see and hear your teacher anywhere you have a solid internet connection. Why commute to a physical classroom when the classroom can come to you? We also offer numerous class sessions concurrently, including two- and four-week options to help you find a fit for your busy lifestyle. New sessions start on a monthly basis, so it's also easy to get started.
Our Live Learning Platform also allows you to communicate with your classmates, allowing all of you to work together and forge a collaborative learning environment that may make it easier to understand challenging concepts. For instance, if you have a better handle on biostatistics than one of your classmates, you can explain it to them while your teacher works with someone else. Similarly, hearing a classmate's explanation of how social science impacts the medical profession may help you understand it.
Studying in a group also gives you value for your money, as each student can cover part of the cost of your New York City USMLE class. If you feel like you might need individualized attention to cover a specific learning obstacle, you are also free to arrange private study sessions with your instructor on an as-needed basis.

For instance, I would learn each subject on my own and then teach my fellow medical students. This helped me remarkably to pass my board exams with decent scores, and in the process I became fond of teaching. Therefore, I would like to share my knowledge of basic sciences that I have...
