Session Summaries by Middle School Math Tutors

Middle School Math Tutoring review by Carin in Nashville, TN
We started our session by working on the homework for class. They are studying probabilities. The student was able to complete most of it with little help. After we finished that, we went up to the computers and the student worked on some drills with fractions and decimals. He's getting better at them, and once he was able to complete an entire drill the first time with no errors, I let him pick the next topic to drill in. He chose stats and probabilities, and he also worked on a multiplication drill.

Middle School Math Tutoring review by Michelle in Nashville, TN
The student and I began by reviewing vocabulary and verbal reasoning in preparation for the test at the end of the year. He had difficulty with the synonyms section because he was unfamiliar with many of the words. I had him make a list of the definitions for words that he did not know so that he could study them. I also helped him to make connections between words that he did know and the words that he didn't know to help him retain the information. We then reviewed three math concepts: how to convert from one unit to another, how to calculate a percent increase/decrease, and how to calculate probability. At the end, I helped him to brainstorm for a possible essay.

The student and I began the lesson by going over his homework. He did well on the math worksheets I assigned him. I brought him some higher level algebra worksheets for this lesson to see how well he knows the material. The student did well on fraction/variable simplification. Then I introduced him to quadratic equations, factoring and simplifying them. This was new material for the student, but he caught on quickly. I gave him a few problems to try for homework. We then did some logical reasoning practice questions from the book. The student really likes these problems, and he did well on them.

Middle School Math Tutoring review by James in Nashville, TN
The student had a strong session today, working on 8th grade level algebra. She struggled a bit with higher-level critical thinking pieces (finding the error in a series of steps), but should be able to overcome this by thinking out loud and slowing down her decision making. She was assigned online exercises for homework over the weekend.

Middle School Math Tutoring review by Simon in Nashville, TN
We did more work on factoring and expansion, as these areas are things that the student still has some trouble with. In addition, we went through the chapters they have covered in class and did many of the practice problems, mostly concerning order of operations and using flowcharts to visualize them. For next time I am hoping we will be able to review some tests and homework assignments that he gets back. I would like to bring some more factoring and expansion problems next time, to keep his skills honed in those areas.

Middle School Math Tutoring review by Diana in Nashville, TN
We warmed up with a review from last session's lesson on prime factorization and then we moved on to writing the short hand with exponents. He was able to catch on quickly. I did a quick lesson on multiplying negative and positive numbers together, and helped him visualize negative numbers with a number line. We reviewed GCF and he was able to recall it very well. The last topic we worked on was testing for divisibility by 2, 3, and 5. I would like for the parent to let me know what else she is working on with the student so I can move at her pace.
