Session Summaries by Math Tutors

Math Tutoring review by Erin in San Diego, CA
The student and I continue to practice the same concepts from yesterday by using practice sheets she had. After checking for understanding about asymptotes, I wrote out a basic definition/explanation and then we spend some time looking at graph pictures we'd already produced with her homework problems to help her identify what it looks like. It is a concept she knows, and she is wrapping her mind around what it is and what it means.

Math Tutoring review by Brittany in San Diego, CA
The student is doing better with algebra, but we'll need to increase her pace for the standardized test. Her final is Monday, and she seems prepared for the test. By the end of this session, we had gone through the entire review packet. The only thing she had problems with this time around was data plots, but as we went over them she quickly picked them up (we hadn't gone over them since her first session).

Math Tutoring review by Kathryn in San Diego, CA
The student and I worked on finding the surface area of rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and cylinders. He was great at this and systematically worked through tricky word problems. After we finished his assignment we worked together to learn about taking the volume of different objects. We began with basic shapes but eventually moved to find the volume of irregular shapes. We divided shapes into their most simple components and found the volume of each part of the shape. He picked this up pretty quickly.

We covered all of the past few assignments that she's been working on, including Dilation and Triangle Bisectors. We plan to meet to cover the next two units before her final exam. We covered the necessary material in the first hour. So the last half hour was preparing for future units.

Math Tutoring review by Zachary in San Diego, CA
The student and I worked on the second half of her review test today. We covered a couple problems that we weren't able to finish yesterday, then moved on to new problems. We looked at Taylor and Maclaurin series, determining the convergence of series based on the ratio test, and the integration of functions using u-substitution, partial fractions, and integration by parts. At the end, I also gave her a few problems to review covering log rules and the volumes of rotated bodies. I think our sessions went well; we looked at almost all of the problems on her mock exam, and I think she understands the material we reviewed better after our sessions.

Math Tutoring review by Kim in San Diego, CA
Today we reviewed her homework. They are working on right triangles, and finding the sine, cosine and tangent. We discussed how the Pythagorean theorem can be applied to these types of questions. We also went over the "special" isosceles right triangles, and how to multiply with radicals. (45,45,90) She did well. She had an old quiz she wanted to review. After going over it she seemed to have a better grasp and was able to correct her mistakes.
