San Diego Latin Tutoring FAQ

Varsity Tutors can connect you with a San Diego Latin tutor if you need help understanding the many challenging aspects of the language. Studying a new language can be daunting. You can easily get frustrated and lose interest if you are not able to see progress in your skills. With San Diego Latin tutoring, you can have access to experienced teachers whom you can ask for help if you hit roadblocks in your studies.

How can a San Diego Latin tutor near me help with working towards fluency?

Latin is considered a "dead" language, which means no community currently represents or speaks the language. However, it can still be useful to know if you are working as a legal professional, a medical or scientific researcher, or studying theology. Knowing Latin can also help you if you are studying any other modern Romance language such as Spanish, French, or Italian since these languages all came from Latin.

There are many English words that came from Latin as well such as adolescent (adulescens), finish (finis), and rapid (rapidus). That's why it can be simple for English speakers to learn Latin vocabulary. With that said, it can still be a challenging language to study since there are notable differences such as word order and use of gendered nouns. Studying with San Diego Latin tutors can help you better understand all these peculiarities and make it easier for you to progress in your Latin skills.

San Diego Latin tutoring offers several benefits that you might not be able to experience if you are studying on your own. It provides access to an expert teacher who can help answer your questions during one-on-one lessons. Your teacher can give his or her full attention to you and prioritize your learning requirements since there are no other students to accommodate. You can feel more at ease when asking questions and your teacher can spend as much time as needed to help you make sense of topics you are struggling with.

You can also study at your own pace during one-on-one lessons unlike when you study in a classroom set-up. You can choose to skip topics you already know and dedicate your lesson time to topics you need to improve. This means you don't have to spend time waiting for the entire class to go through each topic on the curriculum. You can use your valuable study time more efficiently and progress faster in your studies.

Another benefit of personalized, private instruction is that your San Diego Latin tutor can use different teaching methods based on your natural learning style. For example, if you are the type of student who learns concepts faster using visuals rather than reading written text, your teacher can create flashcards with images and use those as part of your vocabulary drills during the lessons. You can also be asked to create tables with color-coded sections that you can use when studying the different inflections (word endings) in Latin. If you're an auditory learner, your instructor can engage you in short role-playing scripts where you have to repeat expressions or ask you to paraphrase important points you've learned in a lesson. San Diego Latin tutors can use different techniques to help you leverage your strengths and make language learning more enjoyable and interesting.

How can I fit time with San Diego Latin tutors into my schedule?

If you've been delaying your Latin studies because of your busy schedule, then you'll be glad to know that private instruction offers the flexibility you need to finally pursue your studies. We work hard to find you an experienced and patient teacher who can also meet you on your preferred schedule. With this flexibility, you or your student can have a more convenient way to improve your Latin skills.

Recent San Diego Latin Tutoring Session Notes

Latin Tutoring review by Andrew in San Diego, CA
We started out the session with a few questions the student had about grammar, trying to remember how some things work from what she'd studied last year. So we reviewed a little bit the formation of the perfect passive, and also which verb stem to use for the future and the imperfect. After doing this review of some basic verb morphology, we spent a little bit of time talking about what sort of things she'll probably be learning in Latin 2, as she wanted to have an idea of what was in store for her this year. Finally, we spent the rest of the time doing some translation from her Latin 1 textbook, just to get into the swing of reading Latin again, and to talk about some of the strategies we used for translating sentences and picking them apart into smaller units that can be easily analyzed, and then putting those together into full sentences.

Latin Tutoring review by Hannah in San Diego, CA
To begin our session, the student and I reviewed the present tense conjugation chart for laudo. I asked him to copy the chart and circle the personal endings. Then I asked him to conjugate two other first conjugation verbs in the present tense and circle the personal endings. He did very well in this exercise. I also asked him to copy the conjugation charts for the future and imperfect tenses for laudo. We recited all of the charts I introduced in the session until he could recite them from memory and correctly translate every verb form. We also briefly reviewed the stem vowels associated with each of the four verb conjugations in Latin. I am very excited that he is starting to identify the patterns in verb conjugation as this will help him tremendously in his Latin.

The student has a Latin test tomorrow, so we took this time to review. His teacher gave him a test guide, which we went through. He translated problem sentences and I had him identify the pronoun and how it functioned in each. I gave him some tips on how to study and memorize the various pronouns.

Latin Tutoring review by Luca in San Diego, CA
We began today's session by doing a short review of first and second declension nouns, with particular attention to the "-ius" and "-ium" nouns of the second declension. The remainder of the session was spent focusing on the future passive participles, gerunds, infinitives, and subjunctive verbs found in the translation passage of chapter 44 of the textbook. We focused especially on the formation of the imperfect and pluperfect subjunctives, which consist of the present and perfect active infinitives respectively plus personal endings. Both students are making really fast progress.

We went over all the tenses of the indicative mood of the verb petere (3rd group): present, future, imperfect, past perfect, and future perfect. I started making a table with her on how to form those tenses so she could draw links between them in order to facilitate her learning. I hope she studies a lot more for her mid term tomorrow; she is on the right way to knowing her material well. She also told me she thinks she did well on her Chemistry mid term on Friday.
