We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader. and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Languages Tutoring review by Alice in Seattle, WA
The student has a French and Math (in French) test coming up so we did a lot of revisions. He knows the vocabulary and was able to write most words during a dictation. His only mistakes were in "dans" and "foret". He recognizes the plural and the singular; but we worked some on differentiating between the masculine and the feminine. His reading has improved (accuracy and speed). He knows the numbers from 0 to 40. When I made him write some numbers he had issues with the order/accuracy of the digits (he wrote 15 as 51 and 14 as 40) and with drawing a correct "5". We worked on that until he got the addition/subtraction exercises right. I think he is ready for his test; he was definitely very attentive and focused during the whole session.

The students completed a brief quiz covering verb conjugations for etre, avoir, faire, and partir. They also had ten translation questions. We reviewed the quiz after it was complete and began working on other conjugation activities.

I gave the students their first assessment/test after making sure they had no outstanding questions. I gave them 20 minutes for a 27-question test broken down as such: 10 matching, 10 multiple choice, 7 short answer. Student A finished a bit sooner than Student B; both finished within the time allotted. Both students did very well (Student A - 91%, Student B 93%), getting almost all of the questions correct; spelling understandably appears to be a slight challenge since both got points deducted on their exams for spelling. I will return their exams at the next session. After completing the tests, I made sure both students knew what they would be tested on the following week - greetings, farewells, and time. We then began with new vocabulary material and learning words for pets. The homework I left them with will give them practice for the next exam.

The student's homework was to write a little story using imperfect tense. He wrote his essay on the board. He did a good job, with few mistakes. He wrote the conjugations on the board and we did some exercises. For next time the assignment was to write a story with reading comprehension questions for me to answer (to give him practice in using verbs to create questions). He also needs to review the endings for the imperfect tense.

The student and I reviewed vocabulary and verb conjugations (-er verbs and the irregular verb avoir). We went over vocabulary from chapter 1 as a post-test review, and then progressed on to chapter 2. I asked him to review the conjugations for aller and faire (irregular verbs) so that we can begin going over verbal phrases in his upcoming unit. He's really doing very well, overall.

The student has a test Friday on relationship vocabulary from the book, the difference between "quel" and "laquel" (and the feminine, masculine, and plural forms of each), and spelling/changing verbs. He had no problems with "quel" and "laquel," so we went straight to a vocabulary review. By the time we finished, he was solid on all of the words. Then we covered spelling/changing words. I told him to think about how the word was pronounced because that would help him to know how the spelling should change. We practiced several of each variety, and by the end of the hour he seemed pretty solid on those as well.
