Journalism Tutoring FAQ

Varsity Tutors is the only name you need to know if you want to connect with a seasoned journalism tutor in as little as 24 hours. Finding a private instructor on your own can be tough, as you need to verify that any promising candidate offers the teaching skills and academic knowledge you're looking for.

Thankfully, we vet every instructor in our network so that we can find any student a qualified tutor as quickly as possible. Here are some of the qualities we search for in a tutor:

  • Award-winning personality
  • Results-driven approach to education
  • Knowledge of multiple teaching techniques
  • Passion for seeing students succeed

Proven Journalism Help For All Levels

Journalism is a deceptively complex topic that encompasses writing, editing, and social skills. If you struggle to effectively revise your own work, your journalism tutor can demonstrate how to do so.

Improve Grades and Test Scores In Journalism

A private journalism tutor can create a customized study plan to help you reach for your learning goals. If you already understand what makes a good news story, your instructor can concentrate on other topics to keep you engaged during your study sessions.

If you need more help researching stories, your instructor can share proven techniques to help you gather the facts. A private tutor can even teach to your preferred learning style to improve study efficiency. Sadly, software-based learning aids are generally unable to provide a comparable amount of personalized attention.

How much does a journalism tutor cost?

The price of journalism tutoring depends on your unique circumstances. For instance, you may be charged a different rate for a brief synopsis of how to write engaging leads than you would be for a more detailed examination of the differences between news articles and feature pieces.

Varsity Tutors also provides a live journalism class if you're interested in studying in a collaborative learning environment, or we can arrange group tutoring if you prefer. Contact one of our Educational Directors by phone or online for more specific pricing information for each of these options.

How does online journalism tutoring work?

Your online journalism tutoring sessions will take place on our Live Learning Platform: a virtual classroom designed to facilitate face-to-face instruction anyplace with a stable internet connection. Video chat capabilities allow you to see and hear your instructor as if you were in the same room, while a shared document editor allows your instructor to proofread your work and provide constructive criticism.

Our platform also records every study session automatically, so you can go back and revisit a session on interview techniques or another topic at your leisure. Varsity Tutors strongly believes in the power of online tutoring, and we think you'll agree.

Are journalism tutors worth it?

We get this question a lot, and we always answer in the affirmative. Independent research suggests that private tutoring can help an average student rise to the top 2 percent of their class.

Studies also reveal that eight out of every 10 students can benefit from private instruction, including high-achievers who already earn good grades. Every student responds to private instruction differently, and we're excited to see how a journalism coach could help you reach for your goals. Online Journalism Tutoring review by Anya
Yesterday, the student and I took a brief hiatus from essay planning in order to prepare for her (more imminent) examination on "Of Mice and Men." The teacher stated that test would be comprised of four types of questions: multiple choice, quotation ID's, short answer, and cause and effect. We discussed strategies for how to approach each type of question, and we decided how she could best divide her time when it came to the actual test taking. We took several online practice tests together in preparation for the multiple choice, after which I selected passages (at random) from the book, asking her to identify speaker, context, and overall significance. We spoke at length about how to incorporate larger themes of isolation and loneliness (which she is writing her essay on) into the open-response format questions.

The student had begun working on essay ideas with regards to how the student approached them in his thesis. He then selected two chapters from which he felt he could draw the most evidence of that thesis. We also constructed an outline with three main points, which he was then able to flesh out with evidence from his selected chapters. These measures provided a space for the students non-linear thinking to operate before beginning the linear process of writing his essay.

We studied for the student's upcoming test on Jane Eyre. On her last English test (on Emma), she had the most trouble with questions about minor characters and details, so we focused on understanding the role that each minor character played in the book and connecting them to the book's themes. In order to understand some of them, I drew a family tree to clarify Jane's relations with the aunts, uncles and cousins. We ended by reviewing the minor settings in the book.

The student is applying to a summer creative writing workshop so we researched their website and chose a writing sample for him to include with the application. He will also have to write a personal essay, but will not know the writing prompt until this week, so we plan to work on the essay at the next meeting. We also discussed theme, characterization, and finding specific supporting details in The Giver, which he is reading in class.

Today's session was productive with the student. We reviewed his homework assignments to clear up any questions he may have had. He's improving a lot, which is great for me to see. I will be giving him more English worksheet practices. Our next session will also be a quiz day for his vocabulary words.

The student and I worked on her thesis statement, authorial context, and audience commentary for her in class essay on Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Her teacher is very specific regarding how she would like the essay to be composed and will allow the class to bring in a sheet of notes. We selected solid quotes and provided in depth analysis so she will be very prepared. She earned a 92 on the last paper and I am very proud of her :)
