IB Language ab initio SL Tutoring FAQ
Befitting its international and multicultural scope, the International Baccalaureate Organization requires every student to learn a language that is not his or her native tongue as a key component of its diploma program. The Standard Level language ab initio course is designed for students who have no experience in the language they are studying, either inside or outside of a school setting.
While introductory-level in scope, the course is hardly basic for a high school-level foreign language class. In order to pass the course's IB examination, which is a requirement for the IB Diploma, students have to show more than basic proficiency in understanding and reading the language. They must also have mastered the language to the degree that they are able to write assessments and speak conversationally in it. Passing an IB Language ab initio class and exam takes more than just remembering conjugations and declensions. Reaching the required level of basic fluency can be extremely challenging through independent study. In order to achieve the results required to receive an IB Diploma, students might need additional academic assistance. Varsity Tutors can help students connect with IB Language ab initio SL tutors who are able to provide customized instruction for mastering the language they have chosen to learn.
Language tutors are experts in the foreign language they teach, and they also know all the intricacies of the International Baccalaureate program's language requirements. Each IB Language ab initio SL tutoring session is conducted individually, allowing students to benefit from their tutor's full attention. An experienced tutor can build the entire tutoring curriculum around individual strengths and weaknesses of the student in the language they are studying. This process is far more effective than relying on a general approach made for anyone studying the language. Personal tutoring is designed to focus on exactly the topics each student needs assistance with in order to excel in class and on their IB exams. For example, if a student has trouble accurately speaking the language they are learning, the tutor can act as a conversation partner and provide instant feedback on pronunciation, word choice, and sentence structure. Similarly, if a student struggles with translating literature in the language they are studying, the tutor can assist by helping the student work through exercises designed to overcome the specific obstacles that are limiting the success of the reading and translation process.
Finding the time to work with a personal language tutor can seem impossible for students who already have a full course load, homework, family responsibilities, and possibly even work. Parents juggling similar issues may worry that adding another weekly appointment isn't feasible. Fortunately, professional language tutors are conscious of time constraints and have a great deal of flexibility when scheduling sessions. Private tutoring lessons can be held during the day, evening, or weekend. They can also be scheduled face-to-face online if transportation or time constraints make in-person meetings difficult. The location of tutoring sessions is equally adaptable. Tutors can work with students in the student's home, at a school campus, local coffee shop, or neighborhood library. Finding a convenient time and place for the tutoring sessions to occur doesn't need to be another stress point for the student or their family.
Trying to learn a new language presents a great number of challenges, and the IB Language ab initio SL class expects students to overcome each of these in order to demonstrate their knowledge. Varsity Tutors can help students connect with a highly qualified tutor who can make the process of language acquisition much more streamlined and efficient. Recent IB Language ab initio SL Tutoring Session Notes
Today, we reviewed all the terms that we learned in the last few classes, including seasons, families, animals, numbers, and fruits. Then I introduced different colors in Chinese. I gave individual instruction this time, as it seems to be more effective. I've truly enjoyed working with my three wonderful students, and am amazed by their progress.
The student reported that he continues to receive As in his Chinese class. Today he worked on his clothing unit for Chinese and we also reviewed the colors. We practiced having conversations about when certain types of clothing are worn, using a new grammatical structure for adverbial clauses that I taught him and he learned quickly. He practiced copying all his new vocabulary words and while he wrote a few sentences, the focus of today's session was on verbal communication in Chinese.
He was eager to know some famous cars' names such as Lamborghini and Ferrari. I taught him many of the names of the cars that he has mini models of, such as ambulance, fire truck, regular truck, antique car, police car and public bus. He enjoyed the learning process very much. We also played a game to review the sentences we learnt from this Tuesday. He was able to master them.
Student 1 and I ran through his new action routine, adding in words for "grab," "look," "I'm hungry," and "I'm thirsty." Student 2 and I went through her Little Pim flashcards, creating variations of sentences about common household tasks. Student 3 and I went through part of his new routine.
We started a new lesson on the Chinese New Year or Spring festival. We reviewed the poem at the beginning of the lesson and learned the new words. We also introduced the topic of clothing. We then watched a video about Spring Festival and recorded in English and Chinese the main customs and traditions of this festival as explained in the video.
The student had a quiz the next day, so I helped him study for it. We went over a few grammar points and some vocabulary regarding the Spring Festival. Finally, I gave him a mock quiz with translations and questions to answer.
