What's covered on the SAT?
The exam was designed to assess how prepared college applicants are to continue with their studies at the collegiate level. In the pursuit of this goal, the SAT is split into three required sections and one optional Essay section. The required test sections cover Math, Writing and Language, and Reading. The paragraphs below will provide a more in-depth look at what's covered in each of these sections.
Math is one of the SAT's most challenging sections for many students. The Math portion of the SAT is actually split into two different parts. One of these parts allows for the use of a calculator while the other doesn't. Throughout the Math section, you'll be tested on topics like algebra, data analysis, and some introductory advanced mathematics topics. You'll need to answer a total of 58 questions within the section's 80-minute time limit. You'll earn a score ranging from 200 to 800 points for your work here.
Next, you'll also take the SAT's Reading section. As its name implies, this part of the exam is concerned with evaluating your reading comprehension skill set. To accomplish this, the section asks test-takers to read written passages on a variety of topics. You'll be tasked with reading passages on things like literature, history, social studies, and science. Then, you'll need to answer the section's 52 multiple-choice questions within its 65-minute time limit. You'll be tested on your analysis skills as well as your ability to understand the author's intentions and writing methods.
The last required SAT section focuses on Writing and Language. This part of the exam also asks test-takers to read a number of passages. However, some of the passages that you'll read in this section will include things like graphs and charts that you'll need to analyze. The score that you earn here will be combined with your score from the Reading section to create on 200 to 800 point combined score. The Writing and Language section is made up of 44 multiple-choice questions and has a 35-minute time limit.
You may also decide to complete the SAT's Essay section. This is a great opportunity to show your writing skills to the schools that you apply to. You'll be tasked with reading another passage but instead of answering multiple-choice questions about it you'll need to write an essay about it. Test-takers have 50 minutes to read their passage and respond to it in an essay format. The work that you do will be graded based on the quality of your writing and the strength of the arguments that you make throughout it.
