My son has ADHD, Anxiety, Dyslexia AND a learning disability. He's always attended private schools for learning disabled children, but when we had to move, public school and an IEP were the only option. I called VT in desperation because he was failing across the board and was so distressed. I know he just needed the right environment in order to thrive. After a couple tearful sessions with the VERY PATIENT tutor, my son began to "get it". Once he did, there was no stopping him!

Executive Functioning Tutoring FAQ

We know how hard it can be to assist your student when they struggle with executive functioning skills. Varsity Tutors can help you find executive function tutoring that provides the guidance they need. As a parent, you may be familiar with the term executive function as it relates to individuals with ADHD. Maybe you became aware of it after discussing ongoing symptoms with providers or by doing research on your own. Essentially, executive function can be broken down into three core skills: working memory, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control. Together, these skills are responsible for paying attention, planning and organization, initiating and staying focused on tasks, self-monitoring, and regulating emotions. If these are skills you know your student needs to develop, working with executive function tutors can help.

The symptoms children experience vary based on their age. In preschool, you may notice more tantrums than normal or that your child becomes frustrated easily and expresses these frustrations by becoming aggressive. In elementary school, students may panic when routines are changed, have a messy work station, or becomes easily distracted and have difficulty differentiating what is or is not important. In middle school, students may seem overwhelmed and find it difficult to begin new projects, think that things are unfair when they are a natural consequence of an action, or become easily upset by unexpected minor events. In high school, a student's time management issues may become more evident, their behavior during group work more problematic, and impulsivity may increase.

The student and i reviewed the assignment and the progress he had already made in setting up an introductory paragraph for the 3000 word essay. We made edits to this and began to brainstorm the structure and content of the ideal essay. we decided that the best course of action would be to summarize the issues that HP faces as a company in a very organized way, and then recommend solutions for each of those problems, one after the other. Then he'd write a conclusion summarizing the 'findings'. We spent a good deal of time talking about what HP's problems actually are and we decided the student needed to do a little more research as to what actually caused the mass layoffs at the company. We agreed that the student would hash out the body paragraphs of the paper and we would review his progress. Then decide where to go from there. Next session we'll edit the whole thing and address 'holes' in the content.
