Recent IB Classical Languages HL Tutoring Session Notes
In this class, I helped the student review some of his work sheet from school. I prefer some work sheet that is of lower level with more focus on sentence structure, not the vocabulary. I found that he enjoyed doing practice, I plan to design some practice for him in next class.
Today's session was productive. To close off the topic of our lessons the previous week, I gave the student a comprehensive vocabulary test as well as a written portion that's comprehension based. With the time left, we spent time going over the test, and what she had difficulties with. The reason why I spent a considerable amount of time on the vocabulary is because she requested the list, and she could use it for work. With the time left, we touched on a new topic that we will continue later on in the coming sessions.
We did a grammar review and conversation lesson. We reviewed how to form sentences describing the placement of objects, places, and people in relation to other things. We made a map of China and learned the names and locations of important cities and provinces. We practiced both written and oral Mandarin in forming sentences with the related objects.
The student received a 94% on his most recent Chinese unit test. Way to go! He just started a new unit this week, so we went over his new words and he practiced writing and saying them. We then used his new words and old words to have a conversation.
Today we covered the Chinese phrases of the three meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner. Also we mentioned how to say snack and dessert. The student and I drew different food we will eat in different meal to be able to practice the phrases. Our drawings were awesome! What do you say to your families or the person you sit with at breakfast/lunch/dinner time? We finally learnt these greeting sentences. Good morning! Good noon! Good afternoon! Good evening! And good night! The student said he would say goodnight in Chinese tonight to his dad and mom before going to bed. What a sweet boy!
Today, we first went over writing large numbers in Chinese. The student struggled a bit with this assignment, mainly because of the different systems of naming different intervals of numbers. I helped with this problem by showing him where to place the "comma"ù using the Chinese system - namely ever 4 digits rather than every 3. Then we went into chapters 11-13 (chapters 11 and 12 were very short so we did an additional chapter). As usual, we touched on the vocabulary, the passages and the practice sentences. We also did a news article regarding Prince William and Kate. Finally, I showed him a Mandarin video of a children's story and ended the lesson there. We will meet for our final lesson next weekend, most likely on Sunday afternoon.
