The student completed her volume homework on the bus today. I reviewed each word problem, and they were all correct! She wanted to work on her multiplication minute and did three attempts. She did very well! Her fluency and speed are getting much better. Now we are working on fluency and speed with division. We are starting with 2 minutes to complete it. We also studied for her science test on cells. She needs to know the definitions and labeling the cell for her test, so I emailed her a blank of the cell for her to practice labeling.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Dani in Santa Clarita, CA
During this session, I introduced the student to the many different ways she may see fractions used. We looked at fractions of a whole, fractions of a set and fractions on a number line. She has mastered naming and shading fractions. She also has the ability to see when two or more fractions are combined to represent a whole (i.e.. a shape that is divided into two quarters and one half). Next she and I worked on adding fractions with like denominators. The student also worked on fractions of a set using cubes (i.e.. what is 1/3 of 18 cubes or what is 1/4 of 20 cubes, etc.). The hands-on use of the cubes allowed her to visualize and conceptualize fractions of a set even though it did not come as naturally to her as naming and shading fractions. Overall, it was a great introduction and she showed quick understanding! We finished off the session with multiplication top-it for fact fluency and she added another room to her Dream House to work on area and perimeter. Again, another successful and productive session.

Student 1 and Student 2 both scored a 1 out of 4 on their volume test, so we continued to work on volume problems. They were able to do them with ease by the end of the session. We then corrected their tests.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Kasra in Santa Clarita, CA
In this session with the student, we reviewed how to calculate the volume of a 3-D shape. He has not dealt with volume before, and thus we explored the concept and what it represents in real life. He struggled a little bit at first with visualizing 3-D shapes on a 2-D page, but he quickly started getting better and better at this as we practiced more and more. In order to help him visualize these types of problems, I helped him relate the shapes in his books to objects in real life, and that helped him understand how to draw and look at these figures. He was very eager to learn, and his natural curiosity will take him very far as he continues on in his studies. His mother informed me that he is doing very well in his math class. He is particularly gifted in his ability to understand new concepts very quickly, and there were many moments during this session when he would exclaim "I get it!" after a new concept finally clicked for him. He truly does show a natural passion for learning, and I am eager to continue helping him master these core concepts so that he may succeed on his standardized exam coming up at the end of elementary school.
