Tutoring review by Kyle in Westchester, CA
The student and I worked through another set of homework problems. We applied the same skills and concepts that we had gone over during our last session to this set of problems. This was the last assignment before the test for the chapter. We discussed the test and decided that before he takes the test, that we should have one last session to review over the whole chapter. Before I left we went over the formulas that he needed to remember for the test. The plan next week is to do a review over everything in the chapter. We will pull out a variety of problems that involve everything from the chapter.

Tutoring review by Jharrett in Westchester, CA
Today was our first session. We started off by analyzing her practice score data. She scored 550s on both the CR and QR sections of the test, which I emphasized is a pretty good way to start out, given she is a sophomore and had never studied. We defined her goals--she is still thinking about colleges, but we agreed we want her to do as well as possible, with our goals being 720s on both CR and QR. We went through the first couple of exercises on the CR section, and realized that vocab drills will be needed. I told her next time, we would memorize 20 different words, we would make flash cards and she would write sentences for me using those words and I'll give her instant feedback. We discussed the structure of the math section and decided our game plan is to do a geometry review. I'll plan geometry lessons for her and we'll go from there. We'll meet next Saturday for our second session.

Tutoring review by Rachel in Westchester, CA
The student and I went over hypothesis testing and the errors that result from each. We went through several examples of type I and type II errors, and put them into the context of problems derived from the book (e.g. errors from convicting an innocent person, letting a guilty person go free, as well as finding the correct conclusion). We practiced finding a t-score based on a certain sample size and alpha.

We spent a lot of time listening to the Chinese CDs that the parent ordered. The student has begun imitating what I say as long as the phrases are simple. We played the "hiding" game again and also looked at a picture book.

Tutoring review by Philip in Westchester, CA
We reviewed surface area. I decided to focus the session on going back to the basics of geometry. We talked about pi and dimensions and such. Finally, we talked about deriving the volume and  surface area formulas for a cylinder. I left them with a bit of a challenge. I asked them to find me the volume and surface area formulas for a right circular cone. The surface area formula is not that easy, but it is not important that they get the answers right. It's more important that they attempt it. The idea is to get them to visualize geometry.

Tutoring review by Derek in Westchester, CA
Student 1 and student 2 have made continued use of practice exams from some of the new materials they have obtained. While I met with student 1, we reviewed a few questions he had missed in reading comprehension, and I noticed (and pointed out to him) that he missed very few, even on the types of passages that he felt less confident about. Still, we walked through these together and discussed how to spot details in the passages that point to the correct answer, even when the question deals with what can be inferred from the passage. Student 2 and I had less time, but we walked through most of a grammar test together and reviewed some rules about punctuation and usage, plus a few things to watch for like subject-verb agreement and pronoun-antecedent agreement. We also touched on the science section of the ACT. I mentioned to both some of the differences between the science and reading comprehension sections and some brief tips on approaching those questions while they practice.
