The ISEE is a standardized test that many private schools use as a part of their admissions process. If you want your student to attend a private school, it may be helpful to enroll them in an Ann Arbor ISEE class by contacting Varsity Tutors.
The ISEE is divided into four different levels based on grade level. Students who are entering ninth grade take the Upper Level test, students who are entering seventh or eighth grade take the Middle Level test, students entering fifth or sixth grade take the Lower Level test, and students entering second through fourth grade take the Primary Level. The number of questions and the amount of time students have to finish each section are the same for the Lower, Middle, and Upper Levels.
What can an Ann Arbor ISEE class help my student review?
The Upper, Middle, and Lower Levels of the ISEE all consist of five sections, which include Math Achievement, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and an Essay. While each section contains the same number of questions, each level covers different topics within those sections. What follows is an overview of each of the five sections and the topics your student can expect to encounter on them at each of the three levels.
Math Achievement
The Math Achievement Sections is made up of 47 questions and students have 40 minutes to finish it. This section is concerned with math related topics. At the Upper Level, this section covers using coordinate grids, solving equations, and finding the area and perimeter of geometric shapes. At the Middle Level, this section covers measurement, Venn Diagrams, and ratios, among other concepts. The Lower Level test covers patterns, symmetry, and estimation, to name a few concepts.
Reading Comprehension
The Reading Comprehension contains 36 questions and students have 35 minutes to finish it. This section requires students to read through passages and answer questions about them. At the Upper Level, this section includes being able to identify relationships between different literary genres, inferring information that is not explicitly stated in the passage, and cause and effect. The Middle Level has students compare and contrast information and identify figurative and literal language use. The Lower Level test involves finding the main ideas of a passage and answering questions about style and organization.
Verbal Reasoning
The Verbal Reasoning Section contains 40 questions and takes 20 minutes to complete. This section focuses on English language skills. At the Upper Level, this section covers context clues, high school vocabulary, and roots. At the Middle Level, this section covers a combination of middle and high school vocabulary and parts of speech. At the Lower Level, this section goes over sentence completion and elementary school vocabulary.
Quantitative Reasoning
The Quantitative Reasoning Section contains 37 questions and takes 35 minutes to finish. At every level, this section focuses on quantitative skills. At the Upper Level, this section covers making inferences about a data set, working with variables, and solving equations, among other topics.
At the Middle Level, this section involves using formulas to calculate measurements, working with integers, and working with decimals. At the Lower Level, this section focuses on more basic math, such as identifying geometric shapes and finding the probability of an event.
Essay
The Essay section contains one prompt and can be completed in 30 minutes. This section has students write an essay about a topic of interest for students at their grade level. The purpose of this essay is to give the school they're applying to a better idea of who they are based on their creativity and personality. This section also gives students a chance to show off their writing skills in terms of spelling, punctuation, and organization.
Primary Level ISEE
While the Upper, Middle, and Lower Level tests all have the same five sections the Primary Level test has between three and four sections based on the grade level of the student. Students in second grade take four sections. The section that is unique to the test given to second graders is called the Auditory Comprehension Section and it contains 6 questions. This section has students listen to different passages and answer questions about them. Topics can be either fiction or nonfiction.
Students in second through fourth grades take a test with Math, Reading, and Writing sections. The Math Section has questions about math operations and is multiple choice. The Reading Section is also multiple choice and looks at students' reading comprehension and their vocabulary. Finally, the Writing Section has students look at a picture and write a story about it.
How can an Ann Arbor ISEE course help my student prepare?
There are a lot of different ways that an Ann Arbor ISEE course can help your student prepare for the test. One major benefit of enrolling your student in an Ann Arbor ISEE course is that the class takes place entirely online. So whether your student has ballet, chorus, or tennis, you can find a time that works best for your student. There's no need for you to spend your precious time driving your student to another activity because they can simply take their class at your house. With new courses starting up every week, you should be able to find a course that fits in with both your schedule and your student's schedule.
Another benefit to signing up your student for an Ann Arbor ISEE course is that it is similar to a traditional classroom setting. Your student will have access to an instructor who can help them go over material that is likely to be on each section of the test. Your student can also collaborate with other students, which can be helpful for some students because it offers them an opportunity to work with others in group activities or class discussions.
