Students who are applying to independent schools may be required to take the ISEE, and Varsity Tutors can help your student prepare with an Omaha ISEE prep course. ISEE stands for Independent School Entrance Examination, and it is used by independent school admission boards to assess prospective students. Your student's scores on the test may be a vital part of their application, so you may be feeling some stress about how they'll perform on test day and what you can do to get them feeling well-equipped and confident. This is where an Omaha ISEE course can provide excellent value, giving your student access to a qualified instructor who will help students understand both content material and test-taking strategies that can give them a leg up on the competition.
In an Omaha ISEE class, your student will participate in group discussions in an online classroom, where they'll interact with their teacher and their peers just as if they were gathered around a table together, seeing, hearing, and speaking with their classmates. An online class can be a relief for those with busy schedules as it removes any need for a commute and can offer more class options to fit your needs. Whether your student is just getting started studying for the ISEE, or if you're looking for a way to bring their studies to a new level, an Omaha ISEE class can provide solutions and meet your student wherever they're at in their academic journey.
What will an Omaha ISEE course cover?
The version of the ISEE that your student will take will depend on their grade level. Students entering grades 2 through 4 will take the Primary Level, whereas the Lower Level covers grades 5 and 6, the Middle Level covers grades 7 and 8, and the Upper Level is taken by students entering the 9th grade and above. Let's spend some time here looking at each version of the test so you can know what your student will be studying in an ISEE course.
At the Primary Level, the ISEE consists of Reading and Math sections, which are multiple-choice. These sections ask questions on reading comprehension and basic mathematical operations, respectively. There is also a Writing section where your student will respond to a pictorial prompt by writing a story. This writing sample will not be graded here or on any level of the ISEE but will instead be an opportunity for your student to show their personality and creativity to admission boards. Exclusive to the 2nd grade ISEE is an Auditory Comprehension section where students will respond to auditory passages.
The Lower Level uses a different format consisting of Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Math Achievement, and Essay sections. This format is also used for the Middle and Upper Level variants of the test. Here, Verbal Reasoning will focus on context clues and elementary vocabulary, Quantitative Reasoning will involve mathematical logic and simple estimation and probability, Reading Comprehension will ask students to locate information in provided passages to answer questions, and Math Achievement will cover basic algebra and geometry. The Lower Level essay will provide a topic geared towards elementary school students, which will give schools the chance to learn more about your student.
For the Middle Level test, Verbal Reasoning will require a middle school to high school-level vocabulary, and students will need to use clues like prefixes, suffixes, and word roots to figure out the meanings of words. Quantitative Reasoning will involve more mathematical problem-solving skills and data analysis, and students will be asked to use formulas to calculate measurements and areas of quadrilaterals. Reading Comprehension will require students to compare and contrast information in passages, to understand figurative language as well as literal statements, and to make inferences. Math Achievement expands to cover ratio and proportion, the properties of geometric shapes, Venn Diagrams, and properties of operations, among other things. The Essay resembles the Lower Level Essay but with a provided topic of interest to middle school students.
At the Upper Level, the test becomes more rigorous. Students need to demonstrate a high school vocabulary on the Verbal Reasoning section and to show proficiency with synonyms and the parts of words and speech. Quantitative Reasoning will focus on a student's ability to think in the language of mathematics, solving problems, measuring, and making inferences about data using their math skills. Reading Comprehension will ask students to understand concepts like authorial tone and intent, and to be able to identify relationships between texts. Math Achievement will put the emphasis on a student's math operations knowledge using equations that involve variables, exponents, mean, median, mode, range, area and perimeter of shapes, the properties of triangles, and more. For the Essay, students should be able to show admissions boards that they can construct an organized, mechanically sound work that supports its argument with details.
How will an Omaha ISEE course prepare my student?
By taking an Omaha ISEE course, your student will be given access to a network of peers and the guidance of an accomplished teacher, all available through an internet-based teaching platform. These courses are designed to provide students with a variety of means of support. First and foremost, by engaging in group discussions about ISEE content material and test-taking strategies, your student can be exposed to fresh ways of learning and thinking about these concepts by their classmates, and share their own unique capabilities and perspectives.
These group learning methods have been proven to boost a student's ability to both absorb and recall information. However, we know that sometimes it's helpful to get a bit of private instruction, so these courses also allow your student to request one-on-one tutelage from their course teacher, to help bring them up to speed on difficult concepts. The goal of an Omaha ISEE course is to give your student avenues to approach their test prep regardless of their learning style and needs. This is also why our courses are offered online: an online classroom can be easily accessible, even to those with crammed schedules. Courses are offered in 2-week and 4-week course sections, which allows for flexibility in scheduling. New sections also begin on a weekly basis, so whether you're looking for a boost to the final stretch of your test prep or are planning for a test day a ways off, there can be a course for you.
How can I get signed up?
A great score on the ISEE is an admirable goal for your student, but you should also consider how an Omaha ISEE class can help them in the long run. Should your student be admitted to the independent school they're striving towards, the scholastic foundation that they may need to do well on the test will continue to serve them well, and so might the test-taking skills that a prep course can help them develop. Contact Varsity Tutors, and we can give you more information about what a prep class will entail. We can get you signed up for a class that can bring your student closer to their long-term goals of success.
