What subject areas can I cover in my Buffalo SAT prep?
The SAT is a traditional pencil-and-paper exam with three multiple-choice sections: Mathematics, Reading, and Writing and Language. A test-taker's Math score is reported on a scale from 200-800, while their Reading and Writing and Language scores are combined into a "Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score" on the same scale. These two numbers are then added together to produce a composite score from 400-1,600.
In addition, the SAT has an optional Essay section that's scored on a separate 6-24 scale. Some schools require applicants submitting SAT scores to submit an Essay score, so how optional it is depends on the colleges and universities you're applying to. In all, the SAT lasts three hours without the essay and three hours, 50 minutes with it.
Here is a closer look at each section of the test:
Writing/Language
The test's Writing and Language section measures a test-taker's command of English language mechanics such as sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation. You are also asked to use context clues to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words and identify information that an author could have included to make their case stronger. You have 35 minutes to answer 44 questions on this section.
Reading
The assessment's Reading section measures a test-taker's reading comprehension and critical thinking abilities. All questions on this section are tied to a reading passage drawn from the following sources: one passage from American or world literature, one passage about a social science such as economics or sociology, 1-2 passages on the Founding of the United States of America (primary sources), and 2-3 passages about scientific subjects like biology or chemistry. Some of these passages may include charts or other graphics, but math is never involved. You have 65 minutes to answer 52 questions here.
Math
The SAT Math section is divided into two parts: calculator and non-calculator. The calculator section contains 38 items, while the no-calculator subsection has 20. Students also have much more time for the calculator section (55 minutes) than the non-calculator section (25 minutes). Both Math subsections are designed to measure a test-taker's analysis, mathematical problem-solving, and algebraic skills.
Essay
The SAT Essay prompt consists of a potentially controversial issue as well as three different perspectives about it. Students are asked to write an argumentative essay about their own opinion on the subject, incorporating at least one of the provided perspectives into their work in some fashion. You're not graded on your opinion, so no need to worry on that front. Instead, you are scored according to your argumentation skills, clarity of expression, grammar, and style. You have 50 minutes to plan and compose your piece.
What are the benefits of each of the Buffalo SAT preparation options available to me?
If you opt for a Buffalo SAT prep class, you'll attend weekly sessions on our live virtual platform. We vet every independent teacher we work with, so you can count on an instructor who knows their stuff. Our technology also makes you feel like you're in the same classroom even if you're miles apart, so asking for help is as easy as raising your hand.
You might be leery about sharing your classroom with other students, but many students actually find it advantageous. Working in a collaborative learning environment may make it easier for you to develop a comprehensive understanding of the concepts on the exam. For example, you can exchange active reading techniques to approach the Reading section more efficiently, or brush up on your outlining skills to approach your Essay with a clear plan of attack. You can also split the cost of your test prep with other students to make it more affordable, and you have the right to arrange private study time with your instructor if you need extra help with something.
If you want more individualized attention, private tutoring may be a better option for you. A private instructor can take the time to understand your unique learning style and academic goals, allowing them to design sessions around them to enhance your study efficiency. You are also in control of every session's pacing, whether that means blasting through something you already understand or doing a deeper dive on something you're struggling with.
We also strive to make all of our products as hassle-free as possible. We offer two and four-week SAT courses to make it easier to find a fit for your busy schedule. We also start new courses every week, so it's never too late to get started! If you want to work with a one-on-one instructor, you can study on our exclusive Live Learning Platform so you don't have to worry about a commute. You are also free to choose when each session takes place to mitigate annoying schedule conflicts.
