High school students who are preparing to continue their education in a college environment know that they'll have to take a college entrance exam, so if you're looking for a little extra support, Varsity Tutors can connect you with Kansas City SAT preparation resources. Extra help with studying can help you feel like you have a more solid foundation when you sit down to take your exam. Whether you're preparing for the SAT for this year or you're looking to get a head start to build on your classroom experiences, we know how much it can help to spend time with individuals who are knowledgeable about the test you're planning to take.
Students in Kansas City, including those attending Blue Valley North High School and The Pembroke Hill School may be required to take the SAT, which includes sections on Math, Reading, Writing and Language. There's also an SAT Essay section, but this is optional. In the three main sections, score ranges start at 200 and top out at 800. The Reading section and the Writing and Language section are combined for a possible scoring range of 200-800. You could earn a composite score ranging from 200-1600 on those three sections. When you take the SAT Essay section, you'll add a scoring range of 6-24. If you're looking for support to help you reach for higher scores, you may want to consider joining forces with a Kansas City SAT tutor or joining a Kansas City SAT prep course.
What might Kansas City SAT prep materials cover?
No matter whether or not you opt to complete the Writing section of the exam, you'll always have three hours to complete the Reading, Writing and Language, and Math sections. These sections have multiple choice questions, and your score is calculated from the number of correct answers. Time management is key to this exam, because the more questions you're able to answer, the better your chances are for a higher score, although you are not penalized if you have to guess.
The Reading test requires that you read and assess written passages from a variety of sources. One will come from literature, two from the founding documents of the United States, and there will also be a social science selection. There will also be up to three passages from science. This section features 52 different questions. This section is meant to measure how well you can use evidence, use context to determine meaning, and provide analysis in history, social studies, and science.
The Writing and Language test is designed to measure your knowledge of things like sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, and other skills. The passages in this section are designed to test how well you understand words using contextual clues. You'll be asked to analyze passages and to take advantage of opportunities to explain the relevance of the passages or identify weaknesses in the claims. While these subsections are scored individually, the Writing and Language section and Reading sections are merged for a score between 200 and 800.
In the Math exam, you'll come across questions where you can use a calculator and questions where calculators are prohibited. These multiple choice questions are designed to test your skills in algebra and other mathematical subjects, your analytical skills, and how well you can solve problems. It also examines how well you can understand and solve mathematical expressions.
If you choose to add the SAT Essay section to your test, you'll have an additional 50 minutes to read a passage and examine the examples given to support the author's claims, the author's use of reasoning to develop ideas, and the use of stylistic and persuasive elements to make the passage more powerful. You'll also be expected to write an essay evaluating the author's argument, citing at least one example to support your claims. There's no need to write whether or not you agree, as this section focuses strictly about assessing the author's argument.
How can Kansas City SAT prep help me?
You can choose from two different methods of instruction - a group-based Kansas City SAT prep course that you attend via the internet or personal tutoring from an instructor who offers one-on-one support.
Some students want intensive, personal attention from a Kansas City SAT tutor. If this is you, then you'll work with a tutor to create a customized academic plan that is flexible and can be changed anytime you and your tutor see fit. You can meet with your academic coach in the same physical location, or you can connect via the Live Learning Platform for your sessions. If you struggle with the Math section, your academic mentor can find resources designed to give you more practice with the math concepts you'll encounter on the test. They can also highlight any other areas in which you may want extra study. Tutors may also give practice exams so that you know what your baseline is and how you're improving as the sessions go on. These also give you an idea of what you can expect when you take your SAT.
Other students may be interested in signing up for a Kansas City SAT prep course. This type of study program uses the internet to put you in a classroom with an instructor and other students in real time. New sections start every week, and you can choose a two week session or a four week session. It can be helpful to work with other students because you learn about their methods to determine what the right answers might be. Your instructor and other students can also offer tips that might help with time management, problem-solving, and how to lessen test-related anxiety.

...beginning to work with Varsity Tutors in August of 2014, I worked in a K-8 school as an intervention math teacher. There, I tutored elementary- and middle-school students in math in small groups. I work to give all of my students the tools and strategies they need to be successful. As an experienced music teacher, this means developing critical listening and practice skills. For test takers, this takes the shape of understanding test and question format, strategies for breaking down complex material, and educated guessing. My goal is to make the test work for the way you think, and I excel in creative ways to relay this information.

An energetic, ambitious, responsible and intelligent individual who has developed a mature and responsible approach to any tasks undertaken. Experienced, creative, adaptable and bright individual with an excellent motivation towards learning and helping others. ... I have two teaching philosophies as a tutor: to get students to think about science (and other classes) as a process, and to individualize their learning experiences.... In a typical first session with a student I will introduce myself and then ask them questions about themselves, such as "What is your favorite color?" or " What is your favorite hobby?" as an ice breaker and then follow up by telling them something about me.

The exchange of information and education is a passion for me! Creating a comfortable and fun atmosphere will allow learning to be enjoyable and memorable for all parties involved!... Keep it entertaining! I love using innovative and contemplative approaches to teaching; learning should be permanent and fun!... Breaking the ice and laughing is always a good idea for a first lesson! Introductions and getting to know someone is exciting, and I would have a few questions, as well as have information about myself to share with the student before jumping right into the task at hand. Certainly, we will get to know each other more as time went on, but fun first impressions are great!
