If you have been looking into ABIM courses to help you work toward certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), Varsity Tutors can find you a private ABIM class to help you reach for your goal. ABIM offers a total of 22 different credentials, each of which are associated with a separate standardized exam. No matter which one you might be preparing for, an ABIM course could prove to be a valuable investment in your future!
One of the first things asked in most ABIM classes is how the exam is formatted. Each test has its own format, but the following chart highlights some points of commonality:
ABIM Certification Exams Structure
- Maximum of 60 questions
- Scored by total # of correct answers
- No penalty for guessing
Since there is no penalty for guessing, students are encouraged to put something down for every question. If you have a hard time budgeting your time effectively on test day, an ABIM prep course may equip you with the skills you need to pursue success.
Many students also ask about the content they need to know for exam day during their ABIM course. This answer varies wildly depending on the test you are taking, as the ABIM Internal Medicine Exam obviously covers different material than the test on Adolescent Medicine. Let's use the topics on the Internal Medicine Exam as our example:
ABIM Internal Medicine Exam Question Topics
- Making a diagnosis
- Ordering and interpreting results of tests
- Recommending treatment or other patient care
- Assessing risk, determining prognosis, and applying principles from epidemiologic studies
- Understanding the underlying pathophysiology of disease and basic science knowledge
applicable to patient care
There are only five bullet points, but they are all broad enough to provide a lot of material to cover in an ABIM prep class. Thankfully, working within a private learning environment can make it easier to break the test into more digestible chunks. If you are more comfortable with practical topics such as diagnostics than more abstract science questions, you are free to spend your ABIM prep classes on basic scientific knowledge. You might use flashcards to study medical terminology, or even watch an educational documentary that covers subjects you need to know.
Alternatively, let's say that you know which tests to order but have a harder time reading the data once results are available. Your instructor might provide sample results to help you practice. Since there are no time constraints associated with private ABIM prep courses, you never need to leave a topic behind until you are ready to do so.
Each of our ABIM classes also provides individualized attention. If you are a visual learner, your tutor might use pictures and graphs to help difficult concepts stick in your mind. Alternatively, an auditory learner might prefer to approach the same material through a lecture format. There is no universal way to teach, so working with an instructor who can cater their approach to your individual learning style is usually the best option.
We also try to make test prep more accessible at Varsity Tutors. All instruction happens on our Live Learning Platform, providing the benefits of face-to-face study sessions without actually needing to arrange a physical meetup. We also do our best to refer every client to an instructor who fits into your busy schedule.
Whether you are ready to enroll in a private ABIM class or would like more information first, Educational Directors are standing by to help you with all of your needs. Reach out today to get the process started!
