Interestingly, Patterson's daughter Elizabeth would eventually marry Napoleon Bonaparte's cousin, Jerome.

Tutoring review by Alonso in Sykesville, MD
The student was having some problems figuring out the steps in some problems involving limits, asymptotes and continuity. He needed some review on factoring functions since his last algebra class was a long time go. We computed vertical and horizontal asymptotes of rational functions. Once he knew what he was looking for it went by pretty quickly. For the continuity section I emphasized the 3 necessary conditions and how to apply them to a graph.

The student and I went over the relationship between the measure of a central angle and its corresponding arc length. We worked on many problems involving the arc length equation and the various uses of it. We learned how to properly use it with corresponding values by relating the written equation to its graphical implications. We also briefly went over radians; understanding what they are and how to convert between radians and degrees. The student understood the concepts well and improved on the problems throughout the session. I learned that he received a high A on his previous exam. He is progressing well, especially with his confidence in the subject. We will continue with the methods we are currently using to ensure that he finishes the semester successfully.

Tutoring review by Elisabeth in Sykesville, MD
The student and I started our session by discussing the conversation that her teacher and I were able to have over the weekend. We talked about her "team" and how neat it is to have all these people on her team. Her teacher and I came up with a plan to spend time each session previewing what she will be learning in class over the next few days. In this way, she has a head start of some of the math topics. One of the topics that her class will be moving into shortly is 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication. She and I watched a quick video on the "Turtlehead Method" of multiplication. She is familiar with this method of multiplication and even gave me a lesson on the fun method. In the video, there were sample problems using the method that she performed on her own. Next, she tried some sample 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication problems on her white board. She was very successful at using the turtlehead method on these. She even tried a challenge problem without using the turtlehead method and did fantastic! We then checked over the homework that she completed during our last session. She scored 100% and had some very positive feedback from her teacher about the highlighting that she did in her story problems. We talked about continuing to use this method in the future. After this, we moved on to looking at her math practice homework for the day. She had completed some of the homework on the bus. We checked over those and took a moment to talk about some strategies for keeping math work neat and organized, so that when answers are transferred to the homework page they are transferred accurately and to the right location. We continued the practice homework, which was focused on the topic of multiplication. She would first verbalize her understanding of the problem, while writing out on the whiteboard. When she had checked her problem, she would them transfer her work to the homework page. She did a nice job of recognizing when she made a small mistake, and would quickly self-correct. She also did a nice job of incorporating math vocabulary words into her short answers, to show her deeper knowledge of the topics. Multiplying decimals was a new topic for her that we will continue to review in future sessions. She continues to have a positive and hard-working attitude towards math and our tutoring work. The student's teacher and I will also continue to be in contact with one another.
