If you are a parent who has begun to observe any adverse changes in your child’s school performance, it’s best to address the problem right away. Since the majority of school subjects rely on knowledge that builds upon previously learned skills, it can be nearly impossible for children to master new, more complex concepts without solid foundational knowledge. If your son or daughter needs help, private tutoring is an excellent solution. Struggling students and strong students alike can benefit from the expert guidance of a tutor. The communication and interaction possible during one-on-one sessions gives your child the opportunity to receive immediate feedback and assistance with the concepts your child finds most challenging.

Fairfax Test Scores

The table shown above gives you a look into Fairfax students’ scores on the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) exam. These standardized tests assess a student’s comprehension in four subjects: English, science, math, and history and social science. Students are tested in math and English each year from grades 3-12. Students in the third, fifth, and eighth grades take additional tests in science and history. Once students move on to senior high, they are given End-of-Course tests as they complete certain subjects, including geometry and biology, in addition to the yearly English and math SOL evaluations.

Whether your child needs help as he or she prepares for the SOLs or an expert to teach him or her a more advanced subject not available in school, a private tutor in Fairfax might be just the ticket. The benefits of tutoring aren’t limited to elementary and secondary schoolers, either. College students enrolled in courses at one of the many higher learning institutions in and around the Washington, D.C., area can also enjoy the perks working alongside a private tutor offers. Tutoring review by Salome in Fairfax, VA
We worked on more reading and vocabulary and lastly went over basic fraction concepts so the student knows how to deal with different kinds of problems. Did well on the reading section he tried at, but didn't do well when he wasn't trying. As long as the student puts all his efforts into the test, he should do well.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Fairfax, VA
Worked with the student to study for the AP test. We went through a practice test that she worked on by herself, and I gave her help when she needed it or made her think about the answer choices she eliminated or chose. Overall, she did well and got most of the questions right.

Tutoring review by Christopher in Fairfax, VA
Reviewed questions she worked on earlier and covered more questions from the Official Guide. Often sets up a lot of the work perfectly, but misses one crucial step that would allow her to solve the problem. Overall goals: slow down to avoid careless mistakes -- get the question right; step back and remember the basic concepts being tested (e.g., if the question asks for probability, remember that you're looking for [desired outcomes]/[total possible outcomes]); use numbers that are easy to work with to confirm answers.

Tutoring review by Amira in Fairfax, VA
The student really impressed me this time! We scored the test he took for HW, and he scored the following: English, 28; Math, 36; Reading, 34; and Science, 36. We discussed the English questions he missed, and he found most of his own errors. We spent the rest of the session working on creating specific details for the essay.

Tutoring review by Kimika in Fairfax, VA
The student and I worked on rational numbers today.  We simplified fractions, converted fractions to decimals, and converted decimals to fractions.  The student had a question when it came to dealing with the place values when converting the decimals and consistently did well after I answered it.  She completed her homework and worked additional problems in the book. We also reviewed her science vocabulary involving descriptions on physical and chemical characteristics.  She knew a few terms beforehand and we worked on her mastery of the other terms as the session went on.  I feel like she has a good understanding of the words and she should do well.
