We completed one of the assessment (essentially, a benchmark for the student's progress). The student did well on the assessment and has built a solid foundation of the concepts that he has covered in the course so far. As always, his attitude was positive. We will be finishing up a few more sections and assignments before taking the second test in the coming weeks.

We focused on delivering, solving, and graphing linear inequalities, and linear equations with absolute values. We also worked on word problems where the student had to solve a system of linear equations.

Tutoring review by Olivia in Shelton, CT
Today, the student worked on homework. First, she completed a worksheet over the scientific method where she used the experiment write ups to answer various questions regarding the experiment. Being in such a curious mood, she then explored how she would do the experiment herself and analyzed certain methods. Then we moved on to math with the topic of fraction and decimal conversion. She quickly and nearly perfectly finished all assigned problems. With the remaining time in the session, we worked on other math curriculum checkpoints and talked about the book she was currently reading, "Tuck Everlasting." She was very motivated today. She was able to finish all homework quickly with excellent comprehension and had time to work on other skills.

Tutoring review by Elnora in Shelton, CT
The student and I met in order to assist her in the preparation for the next exam. She indicated that it would only cover a couple of chapters. We worked through several problems from Chapter 11 and obtained a better understanding of the approach that was needed for each one. The first involved the development of a histogram and then the calculation of both means and variances, keeping in mind that the data had to be "grouped," and we also determined the probability of a certain instance (using the "z" calculation) and the number of years it would take to payoff equipment given a unit cost and an adjustment in the average defectives. We also reviewed a question related to the review of specifications vs. statistical variation (and the formula was given) and a general question related why the X and R chart approaches would not be optimal. I am forwarding a few notes through email related to this explanation and one more question.

We worked on transfer of heat from one material to another, specifically using "MCAT" equations. We also worked on electron energy levels and light. We concluded by previewing nomenclature and using moles.

Today was our first meeting back from the winter break. The student was in good spirits. She said her teacher is still having them focus on functions and graphing. We worked on several pages in the Algebra II workbook, focusing on polynomials (factoring, multiplying, and dividing). I had her do some challenging questions that combined all three and she did really well. I also had her do a matrix problem "just for fun."
