The Rio Rancho School System

Rio Rancho, New Mexico, is a family-friendly suburb of the Albuquerque metro area with a population of nearly 93,000. Most of the city’s approximately 18,000 students attend one of the 18 Rio Rancho Public Schools, one of which is an online school.

Any student could find themselves struggling in a particular subject at some point during their academic career. Maybe your student unknowingly missed out on some critical foundational knowledge and is having a hard time grasping new material. Whether it’s understanding Spanish verb conjugation, drawing the appropriate conclusions from a tricky chemistry lab, or studying advanced college-level literature, Varsity Tutors can connect you with a knowledgeable Rio Rancho tutor who can help.

To see how Rio Rancho high schools perform on state assessments, take a look at the following chart.

Rio Rancho Test Scores

Rio Rancho tutors can help local students get ready to perform their best on state assessment exams. Students in New Mexico take tests under the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) program. These include tests in English language arts and math from third to eighth grade, and science in grades four, seven, and eleven. High school students take various end-of-course exams through the PARCC system as well. Tutors can also prepare students for the ISEE, ACT, SAT, GMAT, and other tests used for admissions or placement in private schools, colleges, or graduate programs.

Besides test preparation, working with a tutor can help your child improve their understanding of specific academic subjects. A tutor is able to take the time your student needs to come to a solid understanding of concepts. Tutoring sessions focus on your student’s specific needs. The ability to concentrate solely on one student and what they need to learn is one of the most significant benefits of working with an expert Rio Rancho tutor.

Tutoring review by Abigail in Rio Rancho, NM
Great session with the student. We went over math formulas for the first algebra and I did a lot of basic algebra drilling to see he gets comfortable with the ins and outs of those rules. I also touched on some geometry and concepts he'll need to be familiar with for testing purposes -- fractions written as decimals, what various symbols mean. He did great work. We then went on to vocab which I think will be the hardest for him to master. He is good at it, but I think feels intimidated by constructing complex sentences. We started in on a longer essay and went over arguments/thesis statements. I'm continually impressed by his curiosity and deductive abilities, and I'd like to see him become more confident in them over time.

Today we review communications vocabulary in Spanish to prepare for his quiz on Tuesday. We made flashcards with each vocabulary word on them and before practicing them, divided them between verbs, nouns, adjectives and phrases in order to give us an initial clue to their meaning. Then while practicing with the flashcards we made connections to words in English as a way to better remember their meanings. Finally I read the words to him and he wrote them down one by one, the same exercise that he will have to do for the quiz on Tuesday. By the end of the session he knew what all 37 vocabulary words meant and was able to spell them all with 100% accuracy. He also was left with the flashcards to study on his own before Tuesday and can also work on understanding the difference between the sounds e/i in Spanish since those were the letters hardest to spell for him.

Tutoring review by David in Rio Rancho, NM
The student and I went over normal distribution, binomial distribution, and probability. The student did seem to grasp binomial distribution after doing a few practice problems. I told him that out of the subjects covered he should review normal distribution and probability more than binomial distribution. In addition to this I gave him some diagrams and slides with further information on probability. The student asked for some tips and I told him that he should work on memorizing what certain variables stood for (for example n meaning number of observations in a sample) and then the formulas themselves. Because most of basic statistics use the same variables, this would allow him to create a sort of educational narrative rather than see each section as a separate daunting subject.

The student is learning new material in his geometry class, which we covered during this lesson in a worksheet that he received from his teacher. Essentially, the topic was circles and inscribed angles, as well as external angles, chords, secants, and the proportional relationships between all of these. The problems were quite complex and the student did an excellent job thinking through them -- in particular, relating drawings to abstract mathematical equations describing geometric structures. I'm impressed by the speed and depth at which the student is mastering these concepts, and also the rigor and organization he puts into problems solving. For our next lesson, we'll continue with new material from his professor, ahead of his upcoming exam in a few weeks, as well as the Geometry exams.

Tutoring review by Peter in Rio Rancho, NM
Since the student's algebra final is tomorrow, we focused on the topics that will likely be covered. Most of the material was familiar to him from previous sessions, so there wasn't too much to learn for him. Instead, it was mostly review. We went over FOIL factoring, solving systems of equations, graphing using slope intercept form, finding the x and y intercepts of a linear equation, solving word problems using factoring, and a bunch of other topics. The only new concepts were similarity of shapes and algebraic inequalities, but he understood those fairly well already. He has a solid understanding of pretty much everything he needs to know. He had plenty of practice today, and I am confident that he will turn in a fine performance tomorrow.

The student and I went over his vocabulary for social studies and English. We also reviewed his math homework, which consisted of converting decimals into fractions and dividing decimals. He did a great job today.
