The student did very well during this session. We went through his completed practice test for his state assessment. He answered about 3/4 of it correctly and he was able to identify the areas where he made mistakes when we went through his thought process more carefully. I also identified ways that he could check each problem, offered a similar practice problem for each question, and showed him other methods for finding the answers. In terms of long division, he sometimes arrives at the wrong answer but he understands how to check his answer through multiplication. He just needs to work on checking his answers. In terms of fractions, he likes to compare fractions with different denominators through visual representations but I am trying to move him towards converting fractions to common denominators. He also went through a worksheet of adding fractions with different denominators and simplifying the answer.

Tutoring review by Jamie in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ
We spent most of this session reviewing the student's math and reading comprehension homework. She did okay with the math but is getting different 3D shapes mixed up, so I gave her a flash card drill exercise for her homework. For reading comprehension she did pretty well, and was able to describe the structure of the piece and why it was structured that way. We also spent some time researching subjects for a school project.

Tutoring review by Vincent in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ
Today, the student had an assignment concerning the different methods used to solve quadratic equations. She was very comfortable with using the square root and completing the square methods. Once she wrote out the base formula for the quadratic formula, she felt more comfortable with it than with completing the square, and she was also very capable with solving by graphing once she figured out exactly what was being asked of her. With factoring, she remembered how it related to her previous unit in her Algebra class and was able to use it correctly. I encouraged her to continue practicing the use of factoring.
