Tutoring review by Sara in Orinda, CA
Today, the student and I focused on several things. To begin with, we worked on his current Geometry section, which is the beginning of chapter 8. We walked through each of his homework problems to make sure he was understanding the new material, and he did a very good job with it. After that, I backtracked and starting giving over material from chapter 7. I'm finding that the student tends to think he understands something, but doesn't actually, or doesn't remember it quite right. I found a section of his past work that he was unable to do, and I walked him through it. After some more practice problems in this area, the student seemed to understand the basics, which is great. In our future lessons, we will definitely go over his new material to make sure he understands it, but I also want to continue reviewing past material to patch up any holes that need to be filled. I don't think the student knows exactly which parts of geometry he needs more work on, so I will continue gauging his abilities in order to find his weakest areas, and target those during our sessions. But he's doing a great job so far. He's remained very focused on the work, and I enjoy working with him!

I worked with the student on solving inequalities, absolute value inequalities and graphing them. I left a ACT packet with her to work on in her spare time and show it to me when I see her next week.

Tutoring review by Yemi in Orinda, CA
We reviewed ch. 2 again since she has a test this week. She understands how to solve the inequalities very easily, so we decided to work on word problems for most of the time. I wanted her to get in the habit of writing out the inequality equation first, before solving the problem. I encouraged her to make sure she reads the question carefully to make sure that she answers the question completely, since sometimes the questions ask for the equation and the answer. She needs to spend a little bit more time associating key words in the problems to the inequality sign and I believe she'll do well on her test. At the end of the session, we started reviewing functions, domain, and range from ch. 3. And we decided that next week, we'll continue reviewing ch. 3 so she'll be ahead of the material covered in class.

Tutoring review by Alex in Orinda, CA
After a meeting that morning to discuss the student's reading assignments, we met again in the afternoon to discuss the material for an upcoming exam. His teacher had prepared some sets of terms that the students would need to know for the exam, including useful descriptors and rhetorical terms (zeugma, asyndeton, etc.). I answered his questions about some of the terms and provided examples for each, making sure that he understood. My strongest advice, however, was for him to prepare flashcards for each, including a definition and one or two examples. I expect him to be well prepared.
