We worked on a test review that the student had for an upcoming exam, primarily focusing on the Pythagorean Theorem, and using it and the formula to find the geometric mean to determine the value of algebraic variables. The student has a good grasp on the subject, so we completed the guide and mostly practiced and strengthened the concepts.

We worked on adding, subtracting, and simplifying radicals. For Chemistry, we reviewed molarity, limiting reagents, and percent mass.

The student completed English reading. We discussed answers to English homework and history homework. We discussed answers to history questions verbally (she still needs to compete them in written form). She still needs to complete history reading for ch. 7.4 and do the assignment. She will be able to do that before our next session.

For today's session, the student and I worked on a response paragraph to "The Scarlet Ibis," which she had read in class. We used the same technique we were using last year, of writing an outline and then filling it in as we go. She does really well with the overarching mechanics - she came prepared with some really good quotes and rough ideas of what she wanted to write. She seemed a little shaky on what some of the quotes actually meant, and what she was actually trying to say, but by asking her questions (How did that affect the narrator? Why do you think he said that?) she was able to put together a well-written paragraph.

This was a good session. We worked on a bunch of problems in simplifying radicals. We talked out the mechanics of the simplification in a little more detail than we had in previous sessions. He seemed to respond to exponent form after some repetition which helped. Then we solved a number of quadratic type problems. Although these were mostly algebra type concepts, I'm glad he brought them to the session because they are critical for his high school math education and beyond.

Tutoring review by Reggie in Oakland, NJ
Today's session seemed to go quite well, as we were able to determine the areas that the student was struggling in and then work towards improving upon them. We went over constant acceleration problems today; this topic can definitely be tough for beginners, but I think she will quickly catch on and grasp the concepts with practice. The first issue we came across was that she would sometimes have errors in her units. The difficulty in making sure units are used correctly is in the fact that most students are used to performing operations on numbers rather than symbols and units. However, multiplying and dividing units is done the same way as with numbers or variables. As she works through more physics problems, she will become more confident and accurate in her use of units as long as she keeps them in mind in every problem. I explained how units can be very helpful in determining which variable each given value can be assigned to, and in checking work at the end of a problem. She occasionally had difficulty in understanding which variable each given value represented (initial velocity, final velocity, acceleration, distance, etc.), but I'm confident that with practice and keeping units in mind she will be fine in this regard. The only other trouble area we encountered was how to find which constant acceleration equation to use. In my mind, it is easiest to do this by considering her knowns and unknowns. By doing this, she can find an equation that only has one unknown variable (though for some more difficult questions, there may be two equations that must be used, e.g. using one equation to determine time and then another to determine acceleration). At the end of the session I gave her a 5 step process for problem solving that will hopefully enable her to methodically go through each problem more easily, understanding each step. Overall I felt that the session went well and that she was making progress.
