Today the student and I focused on writing algebraic equations based on word problems. The problems were initially difficult as today was the first day the student was introduced to the concept in class but she caught on quickly as was complete each problem after doing a few examples. On another note, the student was very excited that she received A's on both her math and science tests last week!

The student and I covered grade 5 math: finding the greatest common factor for a pair of numbers. The student was cooperative. In order to find the greatest common factor, for the first few problems with a lower pair of numbers, we listed all of the factors for each pair of numbers, listed the common factors for each pair, then selected the greatest one. For the last set of problems, we used the prime factorization method and made factor trees. He needed guided practice throughout most of the session. However, to his credit, his knowledge of multiplication helps him tremendously.
