The student and I looked ahead to the next section that she will cover in math class: percentage increases and decreases. We also reviewed the earlier lessons about percentages as we went through the problems. The main issue she is having with these problems is understanding what exactly the questions are asking, especially with the lengthy word problems. We are trying to focus on how there are simple steps to these problems-- find the given percentage of a number and then add or subtract that number from the original number. We will continue to work on making this more intuitive for her.

We reviewed for the student's algebra test. The material covered was arithmetic and geometric explicit and recursive formulas. The student understood what we were doing. I left the student with several study strategies, and after we completed her entire review packet, we went over the material to do a final review so I could check that the material made sense to her. Overall, the session went well again, and the student works hard during the entire time that I am there to tutor. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday.

The student had done his homework ahead of time. When I corrected him or showed him ways of doing the problems, he would often grasp my meanings very quickly and show good confidence in repeating ideas in a different context, showing that he does understand the material and learn quickly, though he doesn't always get everything the first time through. I look forward to continuing to work with him.

We are reviewing for her test on Monday, and we covered u-substitution for integrals, trig substitution, solving inverse trig functions with the triangle method, coping with trig functions of inverse trig functions, and L'Hopital's rule. We have a second session scheduled for this afternoon and we will continue then.

The student wanted to use this session to work on his math homework as well as review for his upcoming science test. His math homework dealt with dilations and finding scale factors. He had a very good understanding of the material, so we did not have to spend much time on it. We then reviewed for his science test by using his already completed study guide. We spent the most time discussing the order of events in replication, transcription, and translation. By drawing pictures of what was happening on the molecular level, he could understand the process better. After going through the material a few times, he was able to explain to me the events in a clear and precise way.

We went over the review worksheet for the student's test Wednesday. He seems to be pretty comfortable with knowing when to use the Pythagorean Theorem. We're going to meet again tomorrow night for more review!
