Today we worked on sequences and series. I tried to help the student to always write out the equations to help him solve the more complicated problems. When focused, he can do well.

Tutoring review by Brittney in Verona, WI
The student and I spent the first hour discussing the new writing test. We went through the released sample prompt, examining each of the three perspectives and discussing how to develop her own perspective. We then plotted out how many paragraphs the essay could have and what they would contain. It is my hope that reducing her anxiety over this new section of the test helps her perform better on the rest of the test. Next we did a timed reading trial. I am so thrilled to say, she only missed 2 questions on a natural science passage. She does have the skills to do well on the reading, especially if she paces herself to finish. She went over by only 30 seconds on a science passage, so I believe she will be able to work fast enough on the first three fiction, humanities, and social science passages. Lastly, we covered grammar concepts by going through two English passages together and picking out the grammar concept tested in each question. I taught her whatever concepts she couldn't identify or explain to me. In even two sessions I feel like she has made progress, so I believe she can do better than a 20 composite next weekend!

Tutoring review by Sarah in Verona, WI
We started off the lesson by completing the vocabulary workbook's unit 1 reading comprehension. I was pleased to find that the student had retained many of the words from that unit. We spent the majority of the lesson reading part 2 chapter 4 of "Paper Towns" and discussed different plot points in the chapter. She completed the lesson by beginning unit 2 of the vocabulary book. For homework , she is to read chapter 5 in "Paper Towns' and come up with 3 questions as well as completing the fill-in-the-blank and synonym/ antonym portion of the unit.

Tutoring review by Augustina in Verona, WI
The student and I started a new chapter. She just finished solving quadratic inequalities. We started the section called zeros of polynomial functions. I taught her how to divide polynomials as we went through the remainder theorem. She understands how to do this now, so next time we will work on the other theorem for finding zeros of polynomials.

Tutoring review by Lynn in Verona, WI
We covered scatter plots and how to solve for two variables algebraically through substitution and elimination. The student struggled a bit with substitution at first but got the hang of it after doing a few problems. She was comfortable with everything else. I emphasized the rules of adding/ subtracting integers again for her.
