Tutoring review by Alison in Lomita, CA
We reviewed prepositional phrases - what they are, what they do, and how to identify them. She seemed to understand them well. We then moved on to commas and briefly went over all the different uses for them. We did some practice which she did very well on. We finished by going over multiplying and dividing numbers by powers of 10. She did well with me on them.

The student and I had our first meeting Sunday afternoon at the library. We went over some of her work and discussed strategies for improving her grades. We plan on meeting next weekend where we can drill problems and get her to be more comfortable at picking up details and increasing her test taking speed by becoming more familiar with the material. We will work on batteries of problems similar to the kind she would see on a test.

Tutoring review by Elaine in Lomita, CA
The student and I worked on the critical reading and grammar sections of Practice Test 1 from prep book. For the reading section, we covered test taking strategies (timing, which passages and questions to do first, etc.), and we worked on fiction, social studies, and humanities passages. For the grammar section, we completed the first two passages from Test 1, and we worked on common grammar concepts, including punctuation, misplaced modifiers, determining the function of a sentence or paragraph, revising paragraphs, and verb tenses. The student did excellently in both sections.

Tutoring review by Kaitlyn in Lomita, CA
Today was a very packed session with the student. He had a few assignments in his algebra book to complete. While he was doing very well, I needed to help him understand some of the concepts and through some of the more difficult problems, which were quite difficult for a 7th grade level. He also had some critical thinking questions to answer for science about the change of state for substances (solid, liquid, gas). He understood these very well. He also told me that he was on the honor roll for this term, and I am so proud of him!

Tutoring review by Miriam in Lomita, CA
Tonight I worked with the student on our usual subjects, Vocabulary and Writing. We reviewed vocabulary from LA; we made edits on our stories (putting in better verbs, more specific nouns, more detailed imagery); we wrote on the stories; we did a new writing prompt in preparation for essay-writing (Serious argument for why a certain cartoon character should be president); and we ended with a poetry game. I had the student choose two of the prompts from my handout to write on, Tuesday and Wednesday. She is expected to write for 4 solid minutes on each prompt, and show me her work next session. I also told her to brainstorm a few more ideas for the argument essay. I hope that this assignment can be both fun and helpful.
