Recent Hopkins Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Kari in Hopkins, MN
The student and I began our session today by checking her math homework, which she had completed earlier in the day. We then went over the practice test I had given her at our session on Friday. I was VERY impressed by both the accuracy of her answers and the neatness of her work. If she can take her time, write neatly, and be confident, I am certain her math test will go well. I certainly have confidence in her! After that, we still had plenty of time to go over her new spelling words and redo a difficult spelling assignment in which she had to place the words where they would fit into older units, usually grouped by common phonics.

Tutoring review by Erin in Hopkins, MN
The student's teacher had been out for the day but left the class 3 worksheets where they needed to figure out and complete homework involving the law of sines. I reviewed his work on the 1st and 2nd worksheets, and he had done an excellent job of figuring out the law of sines and how to use it. He hadn't started the 3rd worksheet and he wanted me to check his work as he tried to complete it. The 3rd worksheet had both the law of sines and finding the area of irregular triangles on it. The student made only a few small mistakes that we went over.

In this session, the student and I further covered the science section. We also reviewed her college essay, and I gave her some suggestions on focusing her essay to provide a more coherent theme. We reviewed some of the more difficult science passages, such as conflicting viewpoints, physics, and chemistry. Since this was the last session, we discussed overall strategies, including those for math. It has been great working with her!

Today's session, we reviewed geometry topics such as quadrilaterals and polygons for the student's upcoming test this week. The student showed a great understanding of the different types of polygons and could name them. For next session, we will continue to review why a square can be a rectangle but a rectangle cannot be a square. I will use more maps and definitions to help the student.
