Tutoring review by Christian in Fridley, MN
The student and his family had previously asked me to follow along with the course materials that his teacher posted online. I was happy to accommodate this request and so I printed and brought whatever I could find. We started by working on the rules of exponents and simplifying exponential expressions. He understood the concept quickly but needed some help when negatives were involved. After I showed him what to do in what situation and why he stopped making mistakes. Afterward I gave him a short introduction to his next topic of study, logarithms. I started by presenting him with an equation I knew he could only solve with logs to show their usefulness. Then we went over the rules of logs and I had him use them to simplify logarithmic expressions. I believe he will have little trouble with the subject.

The student and I worked on her Algebra packet, as well as a new chapter in ratios. We spent the primary of the focus on the student's new chapter on ratios. The student understands that ratios are very similar to fractions. As the student proved to show strong understanding of this chapter, we moved a chapter ahead to simplifying ratios and creating equivalent chapters. The chapter was best explained using physical examples and real life scenarios. The student had white and blue chess pieces of which I used to describe the concept of ratios, and keeping figures "within ratio". The student had fun with this chapter, as this section tested the student's critical thinking. The student specifically enjoyed the algebra section, as it reminds the student of a "puzzle".

Tutoring review by Tessa in Fridley, MN
Today we began with a review of geography. He did well at remembering the map types and their functions. We took a little longer to review longitude and latitude. By breaking it down to a smaller scale, a neighborhood map, and then expanding the idea to a full globe, he understood the concept of a global grid. I left him a worksheet to study the stars last week. This week I left the compass with him and another navigation assignment. I covered geographic formations with him today. He knew a few of them already and was able to make some connections with new ones. For example, he knew the Grand Canyon, so was able to imagine a valley. Of the formations, we studied the effects of rivers on humanity. He read a few songs and did well at discerning the intent and the emotion towards rivers. We also did some reading comprehension today. He is doing well at recalling the story as we work through it on a long-term basis. He is also growing more bold about asking questions when he has them, which is great. The more he comprehends, the more he will have inspired questions, rather than disinterest. He still tends to scramble past words he doesn't understand. I hope that continued group reading will help him slow down and sound them out.

The student worked on homework that covered kinematics and more particularly on homework that covered the constant acceleration equations. He used the known information about displacement, initially and final velocity, time or acceleration/ gravity to find the unknown information in word problems involving objects being thrown or dropped or objects moving at constant acceleration.

Great meeting you today! Here's a quick recap of the strategies we covered in the session: 1) Critical reading+Writing -- there IS one right answer (...most of the time). 2) Critical reading -- speed reed whole passage before answering questions if you are doing well on time. 3) Writing -- read sentence "aloud in head." 4) Writing -- if there is an interrupting clause, try reading sentence without that clause. 5) Writing -- check sentence for parallel construction. 6) Writing -- often the simplest answer is best. 7) Math -- equations, equations, equations. Can I make an equation from the info given in the question? If they give an equation how can I manipulate it to make it easier to work with (FOIL, factoring) ? 8) Math/ALL -- no guessing penalty . In a moment I'll be sending you an email with some links to practice tests+problems for light drilling. Use these to keep you sharp before the test. But really you're in great shape to take the test on Wednesday. Good luck!

Tutoring review by Graham in Fridley, MN
We went over asymptotes, exponential functions, and how log and natural log identities can be used to solve equations. Additionally, we went over some useful functions of the student's graphing calculator. He seemed to have a better understanding of how functions with log and exponential identities worked and how to manipulate them by the end of the session.
