We went over his trig homework. He's still having a bit of trouble with transformations and with sin and cos functions, but we'll keep practicing. We also did some review for the math placement exam.

Tutoring review by Dae in Columbia Heights, MN
This was our first session of the school year and this year the student is taking algebra 2/trigonometry. His class has started off the school year with factoring polynomials and absolute value equations. His last algebra class was a couple years ago and he had some difficulty with factoring equations with x or y as a denominator and absolute value equations. Asking him to explain his work and have him point out any errors worked really well and he has become quite sharp at recognizing errors in the problem solving process. Utilizing tutorial sites also seemed to work really well. Next session I am planning on bringing some subject matter worksheets and I walked him through a website and how to get free practice problems by subject. Factoring complex algebraic equations will likely be the primary focus for upcoming sessions.

Tutoring review by Connor in Columbia Heights, MN
In today's session, the students and I worked through another set of selected practice problems that covered each of the four sections of the exam. I increased the difficulty of questions across the board, and determined that the students still need continued practice with regards to complex vocabulary. As previously stated, I had no issues with keeping both students focused and engaged in the material. Both asked good questions after each question they missed. In the time that I spent lecturing, I mainly discussed volume and surface area formulas for three dimensional solids like cubes, pyramids, and cones. For extra practice, I would recommend continued use of the online resources. They have progressed noticeably in terms of speed and accuracy since our first meeting.

Tutoring review by Shawn in Columbia Heights, MN
I was happy to hear that the student continued to review the material we had gone over last week and had passes his recent government test. Today he had quite a bit of math homework that took the rest of our session. He had two worksheets that involved time-consuming problems. Each problem had to be solved, then graphed appropriately. At first he could not recall how to set up these sorts of problems. We reviewed the concept and walked through a few problems together. He remembered how to do those problems and was able to complete them with prompts. By the end of the second worksheet, he was able to do the problems correctly without help.

We covered ratios and similar triangles. I had the student work independently more than I usually do to make him think a little harder. He did very well overall, and he understands multiple ways to do these problems.
