Tutoring review by Zachary in Clayton, CA
We worked on rational polynomials, and reducing them to more manageable pieces. We also covered graphing of rational polynomials including all tree types of asymptotes, holes, zeros, etc. I broke them up into three cases, depending on the degree of the numerator vs degree of the polynomial, and we utilized calculus thinking (limits) to derive their properties from first concepts. The student responded well to this approach and seemed to come away with a better understanding. He has a good attitude and seems to struggle mostly when he doesn't understand the origins of the methods he is learning. We will work on that in future sessions.

Tutoring review by Anna in Clayton, CA
The student and I started a new topic yesterday- geometry. The lesson and the homework revolved around applying newly learned definitions of vertex, ray, line, line segment, congruent, and plane. The student felt that this was easy for him, which is a good sign! He understood all the terms well, and we practiced pointing out things in the room for each definition. I think he was best able to think of the difference between lines and line segments as the former having arrows on each end and the latter having no arrows. He had fun being creative with a final problem we did from the book which required him to draw a certain number of points, rays, lines, and line segments in one picture.

We reviewed what the student had done in his algebra class and previewed what he would be doing in physics. We spent most of the time practicing vectors and trying to get a handle on them as they will be important for the class.

The student finished his test. He did well, although there's still room for improvement. For this session, we started on some of his future homework related to transversals, parallel, and skew lines. We repeatedly hammered on angle relationships to make sure those were cemented for him. From our work, he should be ahead on his next few homework assignments.

Today we began with addition and subtraction flash cards. She did a good job. Next, we finished a page that converted dollars to cents. Following this, she completed a page that had money math in subtraction, addition, and some division and multiplication.
