Tutoring review by Jan in Berlin, CT
Today the student wanted to go over some basics. We spent the session discussing means, variance, and standard deviations. Then we calculated a variance and standard deviation by hand as a way of helping her to understand what the numbers mean and where they come from. I gave her some more sets of numbers to work with to calculate the means, var., and SD.

The student has no homework. We worked on practice problems from a math assessment packet. They involved looking at various types of problems and allowing him to solve familiar problems and new ones. We also reviewed concepts from his last chapter: percentage, decimal, fractions, and converting between them. We also covered rounding off or estimating to the nearest ten or nearest tenth. Both areas of review show him to be feeling more comfortable with applying what he knows. The math assessment problem solving shows him to be good with fractions, reciprocals, long division, area and perimeters of quadrilaterals, reading graphs, reducing fractions, and doing some commonsense calculations when starting a problem, i.e., where reasonable answers fall. For the next meeting I will copy his math table of contents and start to review what he's studied this school year, including more practice problems as well.

Tutoring review by Rachel in Berlin, CT
Today, we went over the topics that were going to be on the student's final exam for geometry. We spent some time on special triangles but the majority of the time was spent on circles. We went over secant, tangent, cords, major and minor arcs. She seemed more comfortable after the session and was confident she would do well on her exam.

Tutoring review by Sandra in Berlin, CT
Today, the student and I discussed his homework. He had a chapter quiz paper for the book Maroo of the Winter Caves. He was able to answer all questions correctly and reference his answer to a particular page in the book. We then worked on his vocabulary packet, the concept being covered was compound words. He was able to complete this work with very little help using his deductive reasoning skills. Next, we discussed his Social Studies handout. He stated that Social Studies was his favorite subject in school . They were studying Ancient Civilizations -Fertile Crescent. He answered all questions correctly, we put all his work in his binder. I then reviewed his school binder and looked over work that had been returned to him by his teacher. We discussed how he had all the correct answers yet points were taken off for grammar. We went back and double-checked his homework making necessary grammar corrections. Finally, I had him read to me from his book, stopping to discuss character traits and vocabulary. I gave him a helpful tip that as he reads to keep a stack of post its by his book, and when he comes across a word he doesn't know to write it on the post it to look up later. Next session is scheduled for Tuesday.

Tutoring review by Justis in Berlin, CT
I was taken away by the drastic improvement in the student's math skills as she most recently showed me her grade on her quiz which was 80! What an improvement. I am very happy and honored to have been impacting her in such a positive and quick way. Today we worked on questions she got incorrect on the quiz and her homework sets that involved unit rate, constant ratio, and constant of proportionality. She had some trouble in the beginning but quickly learned how to tackle these questions. She is well on her way to be able to tackle these questions on her own and I am glad that she has made much improvement since the time I have started to tutor her.
