Tutoring review by Meghan in Alpine, UT
The student and I continued to work on math concepts. We went through simple interest; I had her do problems to find the principal, time, rate, in addition to the interest earned. One of the ways that questions are made more difficult is to ask for a variable that the equation isn't usually solved for (i.e. for f=ma solving for m). We also went through some unit conversions, percent increase and/ or decrease, profit margin, sales tax, and sale price. The student needs to read questions carefully. Some of the questions are wordy or contain extra information. She does need to make sure that she's answering the question asked.

We began by looking at the student's grades from last quarter- all A's and B's! We then went through all of the assignments he has due Friday and made a plan for how he would complete all of his work. He spent the majority of the time working on a challenging comparative writing assignment. We then worked out our schedule for the next few visits.

Tutoring review by Aaron in Alpine, UT
I was delighted to hear that the student's grade has increased by about 20% and that he is passing the course! We have made a lot of progress, and he did very well with the new concepts of similar polygons and the ratios of corresponding sides. My goal is to help him translate his spatial awareness into mathematical equations, at which point geometry will no longer be hard.

Tutoring review by Jennifer in Alpine, UT
The student has a math midterm this Friday, so after I spent a few minutes introducing her to the "Pulley Problem" (a good example of the difference between a math test in school and the math on a standardized test) and we reviewed her academic material. We discussed factoring polynomials and I found that she still had a few difficulties with this, particularly in being able to do simple factoring of polynomials, such as turning 10x+6 into 2(5x+3) reliably, so we worked on that a bit. We reviewed the rules of exponents, and the algebra and graphing of equations involving absolute values and inequalities.

The student emailed me 3 of her midterm review sheets. I wrote out all the solutions on my own, while she was doing the same problems herself at home. I then sent her my solutions (completely worked out and explained) -- and, from talking with her, I believe she was getting the correct answers.

Tutoring review by Emily in Alpine, UT
We went over a worksheet for proving triangle congruency with SSS, SAS, ASA, AAS, HA, HL, LL, and LA. The student did really well with these; she just needs to make sure that any of the hypotenuse congruency measures are only used with right triangles. There was also a bit of confusion when writing down ASA and AAS correctly, i.e. not mixing up the order. We cleared that up easily, though. Overall today's class was really productive.
