Are you seriously interested in improving your grades and test scores? Probably so, since you are here, but do you know that improvement can be easier than you think? It is often simply a matter of learning a set of skills. I am a graduate of UCLA with degrees in French and Russian and studies in Spanish and German, but I have a broad background that also includes work in Mathematics and ESL. In addition to my college degrees, I have teaching certificates from the state of California in Mathematics (up to Calculus II or A.P. Calculus BC), English, and Multiple Subjects. I have extensive experience working with foreigners in China, S. Korea, Japan and Russia teaching Calculus and Pre-Calculus, Literature, ESL, and SAT and TOEFL preparation. Let's get together and I'll teach you what you need to succeed in your classes.

I am an engineer with a graduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I have taught math and science courses for 1.5 years. I also have several years of private tutoring experience, teaching various levels of math and science from elementary school through college. Teaching is my passion, not only because I enjoy doing it, but also since I see how it makes a real difference in my students' lives.I always attempt to explain difficult concepts in simple language, with real-world examples that my students can relate to. My tutoring sessions start with a discussion of the important terms and concepts, in which the student takes an active part. Subsequently, we will be working through some problems together, as I believe that problem-solving is the best way to learn new material. So be prepared for my hands-on approach! By the way, from my past experience, I know where students often experience difficulties, so will be spending some time on turning these weaknesses into strengths.Outside of work, I enjoy exploring new places and travel abroad every year. My hobbies include chess, soccer, hiking, and martial arts.
I am a graduate of Vanderbilt University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience and minor in Art. I am currently a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago working towards a Master in Medical Physiology. Since graduation, I have worked remotely for my lab that studies child development and applying to medical school. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about psychology and biology. My previous work experiences have included working as a teacher assistant at a preschool, a residential mentor at a high school academic summer program, and volunteering teaching science lessons in elementary and middle school classrooms.
I'm a mechanical engineering major who has a strong passion for helping students with anything math related. I like to give my students the opportunity to prove themselves wrong and push past any boundaries they believe they may have.
As a future special education teacher and current substitute teacher, I am excited to become a tutor with Varsity Tutors. I am currently enrolled in the MEd + Licensure special education program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and am set to begin my studies in August of 2017.My background includes working as a substitute teacher during the 2016-2017 school year for multiple districts in Columbus, OH. These districts were urban, suburban, and rural in nature. I served as a substitute teacher in both general and special education classrooms at the elementary, middle, and high school level. In addition, I accepted two long-term assignments throughout the year; one in a special needs preschool classroom, and another in a math and reading resource room at the 3rd-5th grade level.Previously, while earning a bachelor's degree in Psychology, I worked as a tutor in the athletic department at West Virginia University. I conducted both individual and small group sessions, and created written study materials for my students. In my free time, I volunteered in a special needs Transition classroom at the University, and worked at a recreation center for individuals with disabilities in the Morgantown area.I am excited to be in the Chicagoland region and work in the urban setting. I am fully committed to working with a diverse group of students from many backgrounds and of all abilities. I believe my past experience and my dedication to education make me an ideal tutor!
I am a college student looking to get more experience in the teaching field. I am a highly motivated individual who truly enjoys working with children in different topics. I love the feeling of getting the correct answer on math problems and I would love to help students feel that as well.
Hello! My name is Jackson and am very happy to be your tutor! I have extensive experience in Minecraft as I was one of the main writers for the Minecraft wiki and wrote over 20 pages from scratch including key blocks such as bedrock, wood, and all of the tools. I also have tutored middle school and high school math as well as reading comprehension, getting high SAT math and reading scores in the 700s range for students as they are the foundation of SAT material. I am looking forward to meeting you!
I am currently a senior at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I am in my last semester in pursuit of a Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering. I have had tutoring experience through my service fraternity Beta Kappa Zeta. During my time as a fraternity member I tutored Math and Chemistry to younger members. While I specialize in Math and Science my favorite subject is Chemistry. I like Chemistry because it allows me to gain satisfaction by solving problems that others might consider difficult. Chemistry is a great challenge but is a prime example that even the most difficult concepts can become easy if they are broken down into its simplest pieces. This coincides with my tutoring philosophy. I believe teamwork is the most powerful tool when learning. When teaching I like to model problems with "think out louds" so the student can get an idea how I would approach the problem. Secondly, I like to do the problem with the student to make sure they have grasped a concept before having them attempt problems on their own. Working together allows me to assess what concepts tend to be tricky for an individual that they may not have been able to articulate themselves. This collaboration of both student and tutor is what makes this system so effective. Outside of school I have a passion for sports particularly football and basketball. I love the idea of putting the correct people together and working hard to achieve a common goal as much as the sports themselves. I have been on many intramural teams from softball to soccer, and have found that some of my best relationships have started on the court/field whether it be competitive or recreational.
Making sense of difficult material not only makes for a challenge but also a sense of accomplishment. I take the approach that most material that is perceived as difficult is only viewed that way due to the way the material is presented. I tend to break concepts down using common language and parallel those concepts with information that is already well understood. Most importantly, I feel that the information is interesting and engaging and I try to present it in exactly that manner.I have a broad range of educational experience as I started my college life attending art school to pursue a degree in traditional animation for making films. Although I did not finish my degree in animation, I did acquire some unique skills and experiences in the realm of fine art and drawing.I started pursuing subjects that interested me and was specifically pulled toward the sciences. I was lucky to have had several exceptional teachers and their guidance inspired me to obtain a degree in Chemistry. It was during this path to obtain my Bachelor's degree that I was introduced to my favorite subject, Organic Chemistry. The instructor that I had for Organic Chemistry was amazing and made the class not only amusing and interesting but also fun. The experience of understanding Organic Chemistry inspired me to pursue a Master's degree specifically in this subject. While in graduate school, I was a teaching assistant and this was very rewarding for me as I had the opportunity to share the knowledge that I had gained over my college years and pass that information on to students that were currently taking the class. It was this experience that caused me to realize that I really had a passion for teaching. To see how grateful students were to have me help them understand Chemistry was more fulfilling that any other employment experience that I have ever had.I am currently an instructor of Organic Chemistry at a local community college and I am looking forward to what the future holds in store.
I began my tutoring career around three years ago. I had a modest start at a local Kumon assisting kindergarteners to middle schoolers with Kumon specific math and reading assignments. Due to the nature of the job, I was pulled in every direction because of a new responsibility or urgent task. The job was more administrative and the students didn't receive much individual attention.Eventually, I made a few connections and started tutoring privately. This was a whole new ball game in that I have never before interacted with someone for two hour stretches in an academic setting. In addition, my pupil was in high school which elevates the challenge and required a more nuanced approach to deal with the complexities that often accompanies adolescence. To my surprise, I loved it. Not only was this an opportunity to review all the material I had previously learned, tutoring allows me to elucidate the concepts in a manner tailored specific to the student which also improves my understanding of the topic and my method of communicating it. I worked closely with both the parent and the child to address their concerns to meet, and often, exceed their expectations. However, I had to take a hiatus from tutoring to focus on school. During the previous semester, my roommate had introduced me to Varsity Tutors. I was curious but I had to wait until a point in my life where I could handle the commitment. Starting this new year, I will be working in Fermi National Laboratory in a Co-op position and this provides me the perfect opportunity to revitalize my tutoring career/hobby.I have always been adamant on self-improvement and this is an avenue where I enjoy working and constantly improving. I see tutoring as an opportunity to engage avid knowledge seekers and motivated scholars and for me to learn as much from them as they do from me.
I am an experienced elementary educator with over a decade of teaching experience, including serving as a 2nd-, 4th-, and 6th-grade classroom teacher. I hold both a Master's degree and a Doctorate in Education, with a specialization in social studies education. I have worked with a wide range of learners and understand the developmental differences across elementary grades, which helps me tailor instruction to meet each child exactly where they are. I am especially skilled at supporting students who feel overwhelmed by reading-heavy assignments, unfamiliar vocabulary, or fast-paced classroom instruction. My tutoring style is calm, supportive, and highly personalized. I begin by identifying what your child finds confusing and then break concepts down into clear, age-appropriate steps using discussion, visuals, examples, and guided practice. I focus on helping students truly understand what they are learning not just complete an assignment while building confidence, comprehension, and strong thinking skills. Families appreciate that I am patient, organized, and communicative, and that I help students feel more capable and confident talking about social studies at school.
