I am passionate about helping students unlock their potential and discover the joys of learning. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing a student's confidence grow as they master a new concept or connect their studies to something meaningful in their lives. I hold a Master's in Teaching from USC and dual credentials in Special Education and Single Subject Social Science and Math. With over seven years of experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and grade levels, I've developed a flexible and compassionate approach to teaching that meets each student where they are. My favorite subjects to tutor are reading, writing, history, and math because they open the door to understanding the world and empower students to express themselves creatively and critically. My teaching philosophy centers on viewing each student as a unique individual, building on their prior knowledge, and fostering a supportive learning environment. I believe in nurturing curiosity and tailoring my teaching style to inspire, motivate, and help students feel confident and capable.

I have taught in private schools for 15 years, and enjoy working with students of all ages. My BA in Psychology is from University of California Irvine, and I earned my teacher certification through the American Montessori Society (AMS). I am comfortable with a variety of learning styles and enjoy using different approaches to help a student understand material. One of the most enjoyable things to me about teaching is the ability to give a student confidence in themselves by building upon their knowledge, providing them with problem solving skills, and ensuring their understanding of concepts.Education is a strong passion of mine, but I also enjoy traveling, cooking, snorkeling, reading, riding bicycles and playing tennis. Until a few years ago we also rode our 3 quarter horses on trails through the forest and had many adventures! My husband and I live in a small town in Washington with our youngest daughter and our dog Felix. Our elder daughter lives in Portland, so we drive to visit her whenever the opportunity arises.

I am a former English Teacher and I really enjoyed my time working with students. Although my career path has turned towards the Law, I still miss sharing my love of English literature and writing with others.As a former educator, I am deeply familiar with the many issues that students, Teachers, and schools face. When I student-taught at Edison High School, I learned the importance of not only appreciating each student's learning style, but the less salient aspects of his or her life which affected learning: their extracurricular activities, workload in other classes, and emotional, social, or psychological struggles. I held firm to my standards, as to what kind of commitment I expected from my students, and opened myself up as a resource to help them to fulfill those standards.My specialty has always been Reading, Writing, and Literature. Communication and analysis are the very core of what English classes are meant to teach. By using this as the framework for my lessons, I push my students towards mastery of the subject, rather than rote memorization of grammatical rules and literary devices.

I began studying Japanese in high school. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Language and Literature from UC Berkeley, my Master of Arts in Japanese from Indiana University, and my Doctor of Philosophy in East Asian Languages and Literature from UC Irvine. After receiving my PhD, I served as a Lecturer at UC Irvine and Stanford University, a Visiting Professor at University of Oregon, and an Assistant Professor at Murray State University. While most of my teaching experience has been on the collegiate level, I did serve as substitute teacher in Los Angeles and spent two months working at a language magnet school teaching Japanese. I bring both experience in the collegiate classroom and from several trip to Japan to my tutoring in Japanese Language; as a tutor I want to bring all this experience to help students further their passion and understanding of Japanese language and culture. I am also available to tutor in math, a subject I continue to enjoy since high school. My teaching and research philosophy is driven by asking questions and looking for answers along with dialogue; I try to bring this approach to tutoring to work with students to address the matters they want to learn about. My spare time I spend reading to further my knowledge as well as write articles, playing and lecturing about Japanese court music, and going for morning walks.

I graduated last spring from Kenyon College with a double major in Spanish Area Studies and International Development Studies. While at Kenyon, I worked as a peer tutor at the College's Writing Center to help students with invention strategies as well as the content and structure of academic and non-academic projects. As a tutor, I particularly enjoy helping students refine their personal voice and better their ability to communicate through the written word. While at Kenyon, I also worked for two years as a Spanish teaching assistant, leading language and culture lessons with beginning-level students three times per week. I spent my junior year abroad in Santiago, Chile at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. As a language-learner and teacher, I'm aware of what areas of the Spanish language are most difficult for English speakers and how to effectively navigate challenging concepts. In addition to leading larger groups of students, I also tutored individuals who were struggling in the classroom. In high school, I was a National Merit Scholar and National AP Scholar, and I am very familiar with test preparation strategies for the Reading and English portions of these exams. My personal teaching philosophy is that every student deserves a study strategy that adapts to their own needs, strengths and abilities.This fall, I'll begin a PhD program in Sociology focusing on Latino immigration to the United States. Next spring, I will teach English in an Argentine university through the Fulbright program. In my free time, I enjoy reading, riding my bike and playing music.

I am a graduate of the University of California, Irvine and the University of Arizona. I received a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from UCI and a Master of Public Health concentrated in Family and Child Health with a subspecialty in Global Health from the University of Arizona. I have over 8 years of coaching and teaching experience from the middle school to the graduate school level. I love teaching and have tutored many students, peers, and friends in a vast range subjects from epidemiology and physiology to art history and essay writing and even volleyball. I thoroughly enjoy both the humanities and sciences, which is why they are my favorite subjects to tutor. When I begin tutoring a student, my goal is to tailor learning strategies to the student and have the student understand the why behind what they are learning rather than solely memorizing the topic. The terms ‘teacher’ and ‘mentor’ are often used interchangeably. It is taken for granted that there is a key component that sets them apart. That component is simply: perspective. Teachers provide knowledge and skills, whilst mentors provide a lens through which a mentee can understand how to apply the knowledge they have gained. There are various accreditations and certifications necessary to become a teacher; yet mentors call upon life experiences to help mentees on a more intrinsic level. This key difference necessitates mentors to make strong personal connections with their mentees, calling upon knowledge learned from different aspects of life. Unlike specialized teaching, this can include but is not limited to various areas of subject knowledge. In other words, teachers teach exclusively while mentors teach inclusively.If we see the two—teacher and mentor—as opposite ends of a spectrum, I posit a tutor must fall somewhere in the middle. Tutors must possess not only the skills and qualifications, but also the personality and experience(s) necessary to connect with their clients—to mentor them to be better achievers while simultaneously teaching them to be masters of their subject(s)— which is why I am the best candidate for a tutor. I have worked as a mentor and tutor with children and youth varying from ages 5 to 18 in settings ranging from inner city after school programs to orphanages and refugee camps in developing countries. As disclosed in my resume, my extensive undergraduate career has given me a wealth of experience and knowledge. These, along with my qualifications, make me the most effective tutor in reading and writing.Because academic writing requires research and citation, critical reading, reading comprehension and writing skills are symbiotic. My exceptional writing and reading skills have contributed to my high graduating grade point average and Magna Cum Laude status. Besides rarely receiving lower than a B+ on all of my community college writing assignments, receiving tutoring for my University of California personal statements strengthened my writing skills. Once at UCI, I studied abroad for a year at the University of Ghana (British style of Education) and a semester at Kings College in London, where reading and writing skills are more integral to success in the than in America. Therefore passing my courses with such high marks required said skills to be solidified.Throughout the yearlong application process for the Fulbright Fellowship, I worked with a writing specialist(s) and various mentors to produce a grant proposal and personal statement strong enough to assist me in achieving finalist status for the most competitive Fulbright award. Over the course of my final year at UCI, I conducted undergraduate research for a yearlong Advanced Field Study course, and my final paper and project received an award of distinction for the School of Social Ecology, among many other significant writing achievements.On a personal note, I would say I am a lot of fun. During the course of my undergraduate career I travelled to 16 countries where I immersed myself in different cultures. Besides many amazing stories, this has helped me to become a more adaptable personality. I have taught Sahaja Yoga Meditation to thousands of people around the world. In my free time I sing, do yoga and calisthenics, and work on my uncle's farm outside of Madison. I am also a photographer, poet, and writer. I have a thirst for new experiences and embrace change. I look forward to sharing my skills, knowledge, and experience with someone in need!

After earning a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine where I focused on the neurobiology of learning and memory, I decided to change career paths. After completing 18 months of a post-baccalaureate pre-health program at New York University, I am elated to pursue a career in Veterinary Medicine.I completed my course requirements early and am now tutoring full-time, allowing me to devote my undivided attention to my students. I had the privilege of teaching multiple classes during my graduate career, and am excited to work one-on-one with students. I am eager to connect with them on a more personal level so that I may adjust my teaching style to meet the need of each individual.I earned a BA from the University of Rochester in Brain & Cognitive Sciences. After more than twenty years teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, I have come to realize that my teaching must be practical, grounded in real-world experience, and student-focused. I believe that my job as a teacher is to help students prepare for their life's work, however they may choose to define this concept. This idea is something that I reflect on, usually at the beginning of the academic year, to reinforce to myself the extent to which my students are counting on me as a teacher, the importance of what I am setting out to do, and the dedication required to achieve this goal.
