I have been a volunteer test writer, exam proctor, and test grader for the Orange County Science Olympiad for 3 years and have had various tutoring and teaching experiences for the last 7+ years. I an a graduate of San Diego State University and the University of California Irvine. My exposure to healthcare reform legislation and long-time interest in the complex interactions between government regulation and private business markets led to my decision to pursue a graduate degree in public policy. I have a wealth of experience working in groups professionally as well as in my academic career, which has taught me to be an excellent collaborator and I am able to quickly develop friendly, productive relationships. While I am experienced in a broad range of subjects, my specialties are economics, algebra, geometry, statistics and related quantitative subjects, as well as academic essay and professional business writing, government and history. I graduated last spring from Kenyon College with a double major in Spanish Area Studies and International Development Studies. As a young child, I was fascinated with dressing in elaborate costumes and using comical voices to pretend to be someone completely different and extraordinary. I remember begging my brother to play Knights or Cowboys and, while he reluctantly agreed to put on a costume and join me in my antics, we managed to create literally hours of fictional adventures that felt so real we would completely lose track of our time, wrapped in our own magical world. At the age of five, I had no idea that such behavior could lead to a rewarding life focus in education.So my passion for theatre began at an early agewhether it was the elementary school plays where I devoted hundreds of after-school hours to rehearsing and performing classic childrens fairy tale stories or the required classroom educational plays. In high school, I discovered theories and philosophies behind my work, methods with which I could experiment, strategies to try out, and ideas to consider and above all, ideas that I could eventually teach to students.After high school, I attended UC Irvines Claire Trevor School of the Arts, and I continued this education further, both onstage and in the classroom. I played with aspects of theatre to which I had never been previously exposed (such as absurdism and film acting) and recently developed my own methods and theories of acting, Bruce Lee-ing my technique by taking bits and pieces of the masters and combining them into a system that works for me. This is where I discovered my passion for teaching. Watching my teachers work in this environment I realized that so much of teaching is beginning the process. If you can start students, but let them continue on the path, you have done your job. You don't have to teach the "right method" or one that works every time--rather you should expose students to ideas and thoughts and let them choose what is most helpful to them. As a tutor, I have always striven to do only 20-40 percent of the talking in each session and let the students do the work, discovering their own ideas through minimal prompting from me.Teaching requires constant curiosity, exploration, and re-thinking, and I cannot wait to work with you. My interest in teaching started when I was a teenager, when I was inspired by my wonderful high school biology teacher. Particularly, the class projects she used to illustrate concepts were inspiring, and got the entire class excited about the subject. This excitement about science lasted through my years studying undergraduate chemistry and biology, and into a master's degree in biotechnology. Most commonly, a science undergraduate pursues either graduate school, or some type of medical professional coursework, (doctors, nurses, or pharmacists). This was my original plan; to finish my undergraduate degree, and then go on to do a PhD. But after working as a teaching assistant during my master's degree, I realized how much I enjoyed working with my students and encouraging them to pursue and work hard in science.I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland, College Park in biochemistry and cell biology in 2008. Immediately following this I started my Master's degree in Biotechnology at University of California, Irvine. The first year of my Master's mainly involved classroom instruction, as well as lab courses, during which my colleagues and I learned and practiced complex techniques required to conduct research. The second year of graduate school, I was able to pursue my own research and also work as a teaching assistant. I worked in Dr. Dana Aswad's biochemistry lab, analyzing and separating proteins from mouse brains. I also taught a discussion section in the introductory Genetics course. As a TA, my responsibilities were to review material covered in lecture, and hold one office hour every week for my students to come in and ask my assistance in understanding any of the difficult topics being covered in class. Because of how much I enjoyed teaching discussion, I went beyond what was expected of me, and extended my office hours, often conducting exam reviews. Sometimes there were students from other sections who would attend my office hour because of my accessibility as a teacher. This gave me immense satisfaction, and it became clear to me that a career as a high school teacher would be fitting for my personality and interests.As my master's program came to an end, I applied and received admission to a teacher credential program at UCI which I was planning to enter starting in the fall of 2010. It was during this time that I discovered I was pregnant. My husband was also a graduate student. Given this, and because of many other factors from childcare, to the desire to bond with my child I decided I needed to stay at home with my son, and put my career plans on hold.In 2011 spring I started tutoring, as it provided me with flexible hours, and enabled me to nurture my newborn. For 4 years I tutored chemistry, AP chemistry, Biology, Algebra, and some environmental science for high school students. Again I discovered the love I had for sparking scientific interest in a young student, and watching their faces light up as they understood a concept they had seen as difficult. Tutoring students was especially satisfying since I was able to cultivate a one-on-one rapport with the students, enabling me to cater my teaching to their needs. Some students were well prepared and knew exactly what they needed help with, while others needed me to comb through their notes and figure out what to cover during our sessions. Either way, I often succeeded in helping them improve in their grades and confidence in class. Tutoring has also helped me solidify my understanding of scientific concepts and has also enabled me to grasp the order of instruction chemistry, and biology at the high school level.I still plan to pursue a career in full time teaching, and attain my teacher credential. But for now, as I watch my own children grow up, tutoring is a wonderful way for me to do what I love and have the flexibility to be at home with my young children.

In high school I was described as a nerd, not only because I graduated valedictorian of my senior class, but because I did all of my homework as well as extra problems.My love of math and science caused me to pursue a Civil Engineering degree at the University of California - Irvine. After graduating with my undergraduate degree in June 2014, I am now working on my graduate degree in the same field. My overall career goal is to work for a public agency that monitors and analyzes environmental hydrology and water resource models.I started tutoring math in high school. A family friend asked me to help her son, who was struggling with seizures and missing class a lot for doctors appointments, catch up with his Algebra 2 class. Once I started college, I got a job tutoring students primarily in Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. I enjoy tutoring not only because I enjoy solving problems, but because I love seeing and hearing about my students success. My best day as a tutor was when one of my Pre-Calculus students told me that not only did he pass his final exam, but he moved up an entire letter grade in the class. I was so excited to hear this news because I knew that it meant that now he would be able to take AP Calculus which would, in turn, make him a more competitive candidate his dream aerospace engineering program.In my spare time, I enjoy reading. My favorite days are ones that are spent with a novel. My other hobbies include playing piano, photography, running, hiking, yoga, and travel.

There's nothing more rewarding than seeing a student's confidence grow as they master a new concept or connect their studies to something meaningful in their lives. I hold a Master's in Teaching from USC and dual credentials in Special Education and Single Subject Social Science and Math. With over seven years of experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and grade levels, I've developed a flexible and compassionate approach to teaching that meets each student where they are. My favorite subjects to tutor are reading, writing, history, and math because they open the door to understanding the world and empower students to express themselves creatively and critically. My teaching philosophy centers on viewing each student as a unique individual, building on their prior knowledge, and fostering a supportive learning environment. I believe in nurturing curiosity and tailoring my teaching style to inspire, motivate, and help students feel confident and capable.

I have taught in private schools for 15 years, and enjoy working with students of all ages. My BA in Psychology is from University of California Irvine, and I earned my teacher certification through the American Montessori Society (AMS). I am comfortable with a variety of learning styles and enjoy using different approaches to help a student understand material. One of the most enjoyable things to me about teaching is the ability to give a student confidence in themselves by building upon their knowledge, providing them with problem solving skills, and ensuring their understanding of concepts.Education is a strong passion of mine, but I also enjoy traveling, cooking, snorkeling, reading, riding bicycles and playing tennis. Until a few years ago we also rode our 3 quarter horses on trails through the forest and had many adventures! My husband and I live in a small town in Washington with our youngest daughter and our dog Felix. Our elder daughter lives in Portland, so we drive to visit her whenever the opportunity arises.

I am a University of California, Irvine graduate and received a BS in mathematics from there. I also have a secondary math teaching credential from California State University, Fullerton and a Master of Arts in Teaching from National University. I have taught many levels of secondary math including 8th grade math, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. I have tutored these subjects as well as trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus. I love tutoring any subject in math, but Algebra II is my favorite because it was during this class in high school that I realized I loved math and wanted to major in it and teach it one day. I want to help students find the fun in math like I did in high school. I believe that all students are capable not only of learning math, but excelling in it. Because I get to know my students and their interests, they are very receptive to learning from me. Outside of math, I enjoying going for runs, going to ballet class, and spending time with my almost 2 year old daughter.

I began studying Japanese in high school. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Language and Literature from UC Berkeley, my Master of Arts in Japanese from Indiana University, and my Doctor of Philosophy in East Asian Languages and Literature from UC Irvine. After receiving my PhD, I served as a Lecturer at UC Irvine and Stanford University, a Visiting Professor at University of Oregon, and an Assistant Professor at Murray State University. While most of my teaching experience has been on the collegiate level, I did serve as substitute teacher in Los Angeles and spent two months working at a language magnet school teaching Japanese. I bring both experience in the collegiate classroom and from several trip to Japan to my tutoring in Japanese Language; as a tutor I want to bring all this experience to help students further their passion and understanding of Japanese language and culture. I am also available to tutor in math, a subject I continue to enjoy since high school. My teaching and research philosophy is driven by asking questions and looking for answers along with dialogue; I try to bring this approach to tutoring to work with students to address the matters they want to learn about. My spare time I spend reading to further my knowledge as well as write articles, playing and lecturing about Japanese court music, and going for morning walks.
