Then I went on to teach middle and high school classes as a Teach for America teacher for a couple of months.After completing two Master degrees in business and bioscience, I worked as a product manager in the medical device industry for the past 10+ years.My kids are now four and six, and I decided to take some time to be a stay-at-home mom to be more involved in their lives. It is where we utilize the skills from all disciplines to solve real world problems and create future technologies. In order to truly study science a student must develop and utilize critical thinking skills. Such critical thinking skills are in great demand in today's workforce. These are the higher level skills which are "out of the box" in nature. I expect this kind of mature thinking in the work that we do in my classroom. Each of us has some goal for our years in science. In order to balance the goals of the students, parents, administration, and the State, my overarching philosophy is to strengthen the student's technical / science skills. I want the students to be able to take on the challenge of the very technical world that they are going to inherit with a focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). I also want the students to become very strong thinkers and problem solvers.

My name is Andrew Heng, and I graduated from the University of California, Irvine in 2015. I am currently pursuing a career as a physician and will be applying to medical school in 2017. I enjoy meeting people of all ages and backgrounds and learning about their lives and experiences. I have always been an introspective person, and have constantly strived to improve myself as a person, along with the people that I choose to surround myself with. I've tutored for several years now, and what I most enjoy is when I can take a subject that many students consider boring or difficult, and actually make it interesting and enjoyable for them. My main area of focus is on history and English, though I can teach several other related subjects.

I began studying Japanese in high school. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Language and Literature from UC Berkeley, my Master of Arts in Japanese from Indiana University, and my Doctor of Philosophy in East Asian Languages and Literature from UC Irvine. After receiving my PhD, I served as a Lecturer at UC Irvine and Stanford University, a Visiting Professor at University of Oregon, and an Assistant Professor at Murray State University. While most of my teaching experience has been on the collegiate level, I did serve as substitute teacher in Los Angeles and spent two months working at a language magnet school teaching Japanese. I bring both experience in the collegiate classroom and from several trip to Japan to my tutoring in Japanese Language; as a tutor I want to bring all this experience to help students further their passion and understanding of Japanese language and culture. I am also available to tutor in math, a subject I continue to enjoy since high school. My teaching and research philosophy is driven by asking questions and looking for answers along with dialogue; I try to bring this approach to tutoring to work with students to address the matters they want to learn about. My spare time I spend reading to further my knowledge as well as write articles, playing and lecturing about Japanese court music, and going for morning walks.

I graduated last spring from Kenyon College with a double major in Spanish Area Studies and International Development Studies. While at Kenyon, I worked as a peer tutor at the College's Writing Center to help students with invention strategies as well as the content and structure of academic and non-academic projects. The terms ‘teacher’ and ‘mentor’ are often used interchangeably. It is taken for granted that there is a key component that sets them apart. That component is simply: perspective. Teachers provide knowledge and skills, whilst mentors provide a lens through which a mentee can understand how to apply the knowledge they have gained. There are various accreditations and certifications necessary to become a teacher; yet mentors call upon life experiences to help mentees on a more intrinsic level. This key difference necessitates mentors to make strong personal connections with their mentees, calling upon knowledge learned from different aspects of life. Unlike specialized teaching, this can include but is not limited to various areas of subject knowledge. As a graduate from UC Irvines Literary Journalism program, I have always been enthusiastic about sharing the most effective ways to write, read and communicate to the best of ones ability.Enjoying and succeeding in a literature class does not require having the right answers. I an a graduate of San Diego State University and the University of California Irvine. My exposure to healthcare reform legislation and long-time interest in the complex interactions between government regulation and private business markets led to my decision to pursue a graduate degree in public policy. I have a wealth of experience working in groups professionally as well as in my academic career, which has taught me to be an excellent collaborator and I am able to quickly develop friendly, productive relationships. My interest in teaching started when I was a teenager, when I was inspired by my wonderful high school biology teacher. Particularly, the class projects she used to illustrate concepts were inspiring, and got the entire class excited about the subject. This excitement about science lasted through my years studying undergraduate chemistry and biology, and into a master's degree in biotechnology. Most commonly, a science undergraduate pursues either graduate school, or some type of medical professional coursework, (doctors, nurses, or pharmacists). This was my original plan; to finish my undergraduate degree, and then go on to do a PhD. But after working as a teaching assistant during my master's degree, I realized how much I enjoyed working with my students and encouraging them to pursue and work hard in science.I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland, College Park in biochemistry and cell biology in 2008. Immediately following this I started my Master's degree in Biotechnology at University of California, Irvine. The first year of my Master's mainly involved classroom instruction, as well as lab courses, during which my colleagues and I learned and practiced complex techniques required to conduct research. The second year of graduate school, I was able to pursue my own research and also work as a teaching assistant. I worked in Dr. Dana Aswad's biochemistry lab, analyzing and separating proteins from mouse brains. I also taught a discussion section in the introductory Genetics course. As a TA, my responsibilities were to review material covered in lecture, and hold one office hour every week for my students to come in and ask my assistance in understanding any of the difficult topics being covered in class. Because of how much I enjoyed teaching discussion, I went beyond what was expected of me, and extended my office hours, often conducting exam reviews. Sometimes there were students from other sections who would attend my office hour because of my accessibility as a teacher. This gave me immense satisfaction, and it became clear to me that a career as a high school teacher would be fitting for my personality and interests.As my master's program came to an end, I applied and received admission to a teacher credential program at UCI which I was planning to enter starting in the fall of 2010. It was during this time that I discovered I was pregnant. My husband was also a graduate student. Given this, and because of many other factors from childcare, to the desire to bond with my child I decided I needed to stay at home with my son, and put my career plans on hold.In 2011 spring I started tutoring, as it provided me with flexible hours, and enabled me to nurture my newborn. For 4 years I tutored chemistry, AP chemistry, Biology, Algebra, and some environmental science for high school students. Again I discovered the love I had for sparking scientific interest in a young student, and watching their faces light up as they understood a concept they had seen as difficult. Tutoring students was especially satisfying since I was able to cultivate a one-on-one rapport with the students, enabling me to cater my teaching to their needs. Some students were well prepared and knew exactly what they needed help with, while others needed me to comb through their notes and figure out what to cover during our sessions. Either way, I often succeeded in helping them improve in their grades and confidence in class. Tutoring has also helped me solidify my understanding of scientific concepts and has also enabled me to grasp the order of instruction chemistry, and biology at the high school level.I still plan to pursue a career in full time teaching, and attain my teacher credential. But for now, as I watch my own children grow up, tutoring is a wonderful way for me to do what I love and have the flexibility to be at home with my young children.

My name is Rica Mendoza and I am a credentialed teacher with a Masters degree in Education from UC Irvine. Currently, I am in my 7th year of teaching and am a 6th grade homeroom teacher and middle school Language Arts and Social Studies teacher.Through my experience teaching, I have learned that teaching is life-giving, to both the teacher and the student. I have also learned that teaching is a community effort; it is a collaboration among students, parents, and teachers.I am well prepared academically and by experience to contribute to the growth of your child. The education I have received through my credential program, as well as through my Masters in Education program has taught me the necessary skills needed to be an effective teacher. Continuing my education through professional development, especially in technology, has aided me in honing these skills to better reach my students. I have worked with students with diverse learning styles and have managed to successfully meet the needs of all of my students, whether they are on an IEP or are above grade level and are looking for a challenge.I truly believe that education should be a journey of self-discovery; a journey where students find the courage to make mistakes, discover their own gifts and talents, and and use those gifts and talents to be life-giving themselves. Hello, I am a graduate student currently working on my Master's Degree in Big Data Systems.Throughout my high school years, I performed very well in all my classes, especially my STEM courses, in which I took and passed numerous AP exams. With my strong background in mathematics and writing, I was able to score in the 99th percentile on my PSAT and within the 98th percentile on my SAT.During my senior year of high school, I already knew I wanted to enter a technical field, but it wasn't until college that I discovered my passion for computer programming. I immersed myself in numerous programming courses, ranging from video game design to artificial intelligence, which only reinforced my decision to continue my education studying big data systems and developing my expertise in Python.I have 3 Python certificates from Python Institute, from entry level all the way to the professional level. I also have extensive teaching experiences dated back to my high school time, where I assisted my math teacher and tutored students on Calculus and Algebra. During my college years, I worked as a personal tutor for Python at all levels. I helped my students with their homework, projects, exams, certificates, or just guided them through their Python classes during the semester.I tutor a wide variety of subjects, from computer programming to standardized testing, drawing from my experiences tutoring and being tutored throughout my academic career. Depending on the requirements from my students, I always prepared sufficient learning materials and reviewed the core content that I was going to cover beforehand. During sessions, I explained key concepts in an easy-to-understand way with numerous examples, followed by hands-on examples to strengthen their comprehension. Throughout the lesson, I use positive reinforcement to boost my students' confidence and give them the feedback they deserve. As a student of life, education, both formal and informal, energizes me. On the formal front, I have my AA in Psychology, my BA in Criminology, and my MS in E-Commerce, and I have an equally diverse post-studies career history. My love of education has taken me to Southern California where I fed my love of law and learned about film. Next, I visited rural Florida with a stint at a Community Theatre. I've even spent a fair amount of time in the Hospitality Industry in Las Vegas, which, unexpectedly, introduced me to the construction industry. Through all of this, I have been a professional tutor for profit and pro bono. I believe education should be available to everyone regardless of age, sex, or socio-economic status, and I utilize learning identification to impart wisdom in the most effective way possible for each student's needs. I love that magical moment when the student "gets it." With experience in a broad range of subjects, mathematics is the most enjoyable for me, as well as LSAT Logic Games I'm the weirdo doing LSAT games at the tea house. My spare time finds me in nature for hikes and trail runs, and I can regularly be found on an obstacle course (Spartan, Tough Mudder, SISU, etc.) or doing an extreme endurance events either racing or supporting friends. Life is to be learned and lived!

I am passionate about Science Education and making science accessible to people of all backgrounds. I have taught seven semesters worth of science classes at California State University, Long Beach. I coached the science section of academic decathlon at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove for two years. I am currently running an after school engineering program at Pacifica High School in collaboration with the University of California, Irvine chapter of Engineers Without Borders.

I am a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering department in UCI. I love teaching. I hope the time that I teach in Varsity tutors will help students learn and improve in their study. Also, I will gain valuable experience in teaching.

I currently attend the University of California Irvine. I am pursuing a degree in Biology and will graduate in 2014. Ever since middle school, I have been infatuated with the sciences. I've always had a fascination with trying to understand the world around me. This mentality has fueled my intense interest in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. I prefer to approach the sciences with an introspective lens as a tool to figure out a piece of a grand puzzle, rather than as an isolated unit. In addition to tutoring science classes, I have also helped many students with standardized testing yielding great results. In my free time I enjoy playing music, biking, and reading.

I am a graduate from UC Irvine, and grew up in Southern California. I began tutoring students in high school for science and math and picked up private tutoring for calculus and physics in college. I graduated UC Irvine as a biology major and a psychology minor. I enjoy private tutoring because it gives me an opportunity to alter my teaching habits and see which style best fits the student's learning ability. I was born and raised in Orange County. I went to UCSB but then moved back to Orange County to be near my family. After working in accounting and finance for a few years, I went back to school to get my masters and credential in teaching. I now teach high school math and truly love my job!
