My life has been in alternating states of privilege since my birth. I was born into a middle class family with enough finances to live modestly, yet with grandparents that knew how to spoil me rotten; that is until I reached the age of six. In 2002 my mother filed for divorce against my father for domestic and child abuse. Child Protective Services took my three siblings and me away from our family and placed us into Orangewood Foundation, a facility for foster youth. As a mere preschooler, I had no idea what that would entail for us.After the divorce finalized and our mother finally regained full custody she was allowed to move in with our grandparents who had since been our guardians after we were released from the foster care establishment. We were finally allowed to be a family again outside of a visiting room, yet nothing felt the same. After such traumatic events my family struggled to regain our footing in this rat race that we call life, or at least thats how my mother described it. Placed on food stamps and disability, my mother did her best to raise four children with the help of two grandparents that had to come out of retirement to help support the family.Life is arduous and unfair; a lesson I learned from a young age. Due to the circumstances my mothers time was spent mostly keeping the family functioning, which meant there was not always the most amount of time for parenting, especially when she was exhausted and had four young children with endless amounts of energy and need for attention. I understood that sometimes even though I wanted or even needed my mother, my siblings needed her more, and I learned how to better myself such that my mother would have one less thing to worry about at the end of the day.As I grew older and excelled in my studies, I realized I enjoyed two subjects more than the others, French and physics. I started in French 1 my freshman year and continued it throughout high school. My French professor Mme. Sloan encouraged me to keep with the language even after high school, and as a reward for staying with the French program she even planned a trip to Paris for my classmates and me during Spring break our senior year. Even after I was accepted into UCI as physics major, I kept my French skills up with a minor. As for my passion for physics, it started with a man by the name of Kevin Dwyer. I walked into honors physics my junior year and was as stunned as a deer in headlights from most of the physical intricacies of the world so clearly explained. To quote my university classical mechanics professor, It was almost as if I had a religious revelation when I first learned about physics. I threw myself into the work and loved every second of it and I am ever grateful that I had found a teacher that was able to captivate me. Before taking his class, I was unsure of what I wanted to study at University. After taking his AP physics class my senior year, I knew with unwavering certainty, I was going to study physics at UCI.I started at UCI in the summer session right before fall quarter starts. UCI has a program, called Summer Start, which is meant to bridge the gap between high school and college life. I was a part of Summer Bridge, a subdivision of the summer start program for low-income, first generation college students. Funnily enough, I would move into my dorm exactly on my eighteenth birthday, which meant my mother would be sending her son off to college the day he came of legal age. Given our family history it was tough for everyone, including myself. Although we were not able to have our traditional family birthday dinner on my birthday, we celebrated the day before to make the most of my last night spent at home. We set out the next day in our mini van loaded with all things collegiate all while choking back tears. This was the first time I would truly be on my own since I was in foster care and my mother knew that she could no longer shelter me from the world. I was welcomed into the program with open arms; as it turns out there are many people from all walks of life that have experienced excessive adversity and we were all looking for support and found it in each other. The Summer Bridge program made transitioning to university life a breeze, so much though that I could not wait to give back to the community that had given so much to me. I applied to be a discussion leader for the same University Studies class so that I might be able to pass on the knowledge that had been bestowed upon me. I received the position for that summer and the summer after I returned from studying abroad. This community has allowed me to reach out for help in times of need, but has also allowed me to offer advice and support to fellow students going through similar struggles.Fast forward a few years and I am in my third year of university and probably my biggest. My second year was spent planning for my third year, as I was bound and determined to study abroad in New Zealand since the day I found it possible. There are a myriad of reasons I chose New Zealand, but the most simple and greatest of them all was because I admired the culture and the landscape and I wanted to experience what life was like for them. As a part of applying to the program I needed to do research on my host country and apply to scholarships. Fortunately enough I was awarded the STEAM scholarship for students studying abroad as a STEM or Arts major, the only male student out of the six students selected. I went on to study at the University of Auckland and experienced life in ways I never thought possible. I roomed with Kiwis (not the fruit or bird), met travelers from around the world, jumped out of a perfectly good airplane, and made the memories of a lifetime. And as clich as it sounds, I found myself. I found myself surrounded by culture of people that invigorated the hope that I still have in humanity. I was fortunate enough to find a haven that re-awaked the inspiration to keep my dream alive that had started to fade with the passing years. I left a piece of my heart in Aotearoa; in the friends and memories we shared and in my footsteps left in the jagged earth.Studying abroad was more than just courses being checked off on list for my diploma, it was the recognition of what I wanted to do with my life. I want to eventually start my own company and learn how to run a business so that I can share my ideas and potential inventions with the world. I am a math and science enthusiast. I love finding solutions to problems. In high school I was described as a nerd, not only because I graduated valedictorian of my senior class, but because I did all of my homework as well as extra problems.My love of math and science caused me to pursue a Civil Engineering degree at the University of California - Irvine. After graduating with my undergraduate degree in June 2014, I am now working on my graduate degree in the same field. My overall career goal is to work for a public agency that monitors and analyzes environmental hydrology and water resource models.I started tutoring math in high school. A family friend asked me to help her son, who was struggling with seizures and missing class a lot for doctors appointments, catch up with his Algebra 2 class. Once I started college, I got a job tutoring students primarily in Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. I currently attend the University of California Irvine. I am pursuing a degree in Biology and will graduate in 2014. Ever since middle school, I have been infatuated with the sciences. The terms ‘teacher’ and ‘mentor’ are often used interchangeably. It is taken for granted that there is a key component that sets them apart. That component is simply: perspective. Teachers provide knowledge and skills, whilst mentors provide a lens through which a mentee can understand how to apply the knowledge they have gained. There are various accreditations and certifications necessary to become a teacher; yet mentors call upon life experiences to help mentees on a more intrinsic level. This key difference necessitates mentors to make strong personal connections with their mentees, calling upon knowledge learned from different aspects of life. Unlike specialized teaching, this can include but is not limited to various areas of subject knowledge. I graduated last spring from Kenyon College with a double major in Spanish Area Studies and International Development Studies. While at Kenyon, I worked as a peer tutor at the College's Writing Center to help students with invention strategies as well as the content and structure of academic and non-academic projects. As a tutor, I particularly enjoy helping students refine their personal voice and better their ability to communicate through the written word. While at Kenyon, I also worked for two years as a Spanish teaching assistant, leading language and culture lessons with beginning-level students three times per week. My interest in teaching started when I was a teenager, when I was inspired by my wonderful high school biology teacher. Particularly, the class projects she used to illustrate concepts were inspiring, and got the entire class excited about the subject. This excitement about science lasted through my years studying undergraduate chemistry and biology, and into a master's degree in biotechnology. Most commonly, a science undergraduate pursues either graduate school, or some type of medical professional coursework, (doctors, nurses, or pharmacists). This was my original plan; to finish my undergraduate degree, and then go on to do a PhD. But after working as a teaching assistant during my master's degree, I realized how much I enjoyed working with my students and encouraging them to pursue and work hard in science.I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland, College Park in biochemistry and cell biology in 2008. Immediately following this I started my Master's degree in Biotechnology at University of California, Irvine. The first year of my Master's mainly involved classroom instruction, as well as lab courses, during which my colleagues and I learned and practiced complex techniques required to conduct research. The second year of graduate school, I was able to pursue my own research and also work as a teaching assistant. I worked in Dr. Dana Aswad's biochemistry lab, analyzing and separating proteins from mouse brains. I also taught a discussion section in the introductory Genetics course. As a TA, my responsibilities were to review material covered in lecture, and hold one office hour every week for my students to come in and ask my assistance in understanding any of the difficult topics being covered in class. Because of how much I enjoyed teaching discussion, I went beyond what was expected of me, and extended my office hours, often conducting exam reviews. Sometimes there were students from other sections who would attend my office hour because of my accessibility as a teacher. This gave me immense satisfaction, and it became clear to me that a career as a high school teacher would be fitting for my personality and interests.As my master's program came to an end, I applied and received admission to a teacher credential program at UCI which I was planning to enter starting in the fall of 2010. It was during this time that I discovered I was pregnant. My husband was also a graduate student. Given this, and because of many other factors from childcare, to the desire to bond with my child I decided I needed to stay at home with my son, and put my career plans on hold.In 2011 spring I started tutoring, as it provided me with flexible hours, and enabled me to nurture my newborn. For 4 years I tutored chemistry, AP chemistry, Biology, Algebra, and some environmental science for high school students. Again I discovered the love I had for sparking scientific interest in a young student, and watching their faces light up as they understood a concept they had seen as difficult. Tutoring students was especially satisfying since I was able to cultivate a one-on-one rapport with the students, enabling me to cater my teaching to their needs. Some students were well prepared and knew exactly what they needed help with, while others needed me to comb through their notes and figure out what to cover during our sessions. Either way, I often succeeded in helping them improve in their grades and confidence in class. Tutoring has also helped me solidify my understanding of scientific concepts and has also enabled me to grasp the order of instruction chemistry, and biology at the high school level.I still plan to pursue a career in full time teaching, and attain my teacher credential. I choose to interact with the family of the student and continually update them on the status of their student, as I believe that the family plays a crucial role as well as the tutor himself. Also, I approach my students in a very friendly way to eliminate any discomfort or stress the student might have. I am a graduate of the University of Miami, where I received my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. I also earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of California Irvine. In my eight years of tutoring and teaching, I have worked with teens and adults across the United States, as well as two years teaching young children in Japan. My tutoring specialty is in Verbal, Writing, and Critical Reading for the GRE, SAT, and ACT, but I have an overall passion for English language and literature. I believe that the best teaching is usually calm and fun, which springs from a personal relationship based on care and trust for one another. I am currently a graduate student at Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester conducting research in Biophysical Chemistry. I began studying Japanese in high school. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Language and Literature from UC Berkeley, my Master of Arts in Japanese from Indiana University, and my Doctor of Philosophy in East Asian Languages and Literature from UC Irvine. After receiving my PhD, I served as a Lecturer at UC Irvine and Stanford University, a Visiting Professor at University of Oregon, and an Assistant Professor at Murray State University. While most of my teaching experience has been on the collegiate level, I did serve as substitute teacher in Los Angeles and spent two months working at a language magnet school teaching Japanese. I bring both experience in the collegiate classroom and from several trip to Japan to my tutoring in Japanese Language; as a tutor I want to bring all this experience to help students further their passion and understanding of Japanese language and culture. I am also available to tutor in math, a subject I continue to enjoy since high school. My teaching and research philosophy is driven by asking questions and looking for answers along with dialogue; I try to bring this approach to tutoring to work with students to address the matters they want to learn about. Fundamentally, science is the study of how things work ... both theoretically and practically. It is where we utilize the skills from all disciplines to solve real world problems and create future technologies. In order to truly study science a student must develop and utilize critical thinking skills. Such critical thinking skills are in great demand in today's workforce. These are the higher level skills which are "out of the box" in nature. I expect this kind of mature thinking in the work that we do in my classroom. Each of us has some goal for our years in science. In order to balance the goals of the students, parents, administration, and the State, my overarching philosophy is to strengthen the student's technical / science skills. I want the students to be able to take on the challenge of the very technical world that they are going to inherit with a focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). I also want the students to become very strong thinkers and problem solvers.

I have been a tutor for over three years and have worked with students ages 5-15. Patience, communication, and fun activities have helped my students and me pinpoint where they are struggling and improve their understanding of difficult math, reading, and science topics. As a graduate from UC Irvines Literary Journalism program, I have always been enthusiastic about sharing the most effective ways to write, read and communicate to the best of ones ability.Enjoying and succeeding in a literature class does not require having the right answers. Instead, I feel that its about having the tools needed to interpret the meaning behind novels, short stories, poetry, and other types of works. Its also about using those tools to draw ones own conclusions.In addition to having the right tools, I also believe that confidence is important to build in the classroom as well.During my junior and senior year of high school, I took International Baccalaureate classes in English. I sometimes struggled with writing essays and speaking up during class discussions. It was only until I sought a bit of extra help after school from my teachers and even classmates that I began to improve, which is why I see the value in spending personal time with students to help them reach their individual goals.I continued to challenge myself in English and literature-related classes in college. I an a graduate of San Diego State University and the University of California Irvine. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Business/Hospitality Management along with a Minor in Sociology from SDSU in 2007. I completed my Master's degree in Public Policy from the University of California Irvine in June of 2013. Prior to returning to graduate school in 2011 I worked in several different capacities, first as a restaurant manager, later in sales for a non-profit organization and most recently for three years in employee benefits specializing in health insurance. My exposure to healthcare reform legislation and long-time interest in the complex interactions between government regulation and private business markets led to my decision to pursue a graduate degree in public policy. I have a wealth of experience working in groups professionally as well as in my academic career, which has taught me to be an excellent collaborator and I am able to quickly develop friendly, productive relationships. While I am experienced in a broad range of subjects, my specialties are economics, algebra, geometry, statistics and related quantitative subjects, as well as academic essay and professional business writing, government and history. I am also well versed in a range of science subjects, particularly physical and earth sciences. In my family education is extremely important. Both of my older siblings are teachers, my sister teaches high school English, my brother teaches middle school Algebra and Geometry. I am a University of California, Irvine graduate and received a BS in mathematics from there. I also have a secondary math teaching credential from California State University, Fullerton and a Master of Arts in Teaching from National University. I have taught many levels of secondary math including 8th grade math, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. I have tutored these subjects as well as trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus. I love tutoring any subject in math, but Algebra II is my favorite because it was during this class in high school that I realized I loved math and wanted to major in it and teach it one day. I want to help students find the fun in math like I did in high school. I believe that all students are capable not only of learning math, but excelling in it. I graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine's school of Public Health Sciences in 2013. In addition to this, I was very involved around my college campus. I played five intramural sports, ran my own program in student government, which brought student teaching to UC Irvine, and served as president of my fraternity where I managed more than 60 members.I am a patient, kind-hearted, and intelligent person who truly values the importance of education in a young individual's life.
