I believe that any student can achieve their academic goals with the right help. As a past tutor with an After School Program, I know what it takes to motivate and encourage students of any age. I am a very patient and kind teacher, but I also enjoy a few quips to keep things light throughout the learning process. Hi! My name is MaryClaire. I am living in Fort Worth TX! I grew up in Northern California and moved to Texas to attend college at Texas Christian University. I graduated in 2017 with a degree in Early Childhood Education. The following spring of 2018, I graduated again with a Masters in Curriculum Studies.I started my first official teaching job the following Fall as a 1st grade classroom teacher at a charter school. teaching 1st grade has been a wild adventure and so much fun!Through my first two years of teaching I have discovered my passion for teaching students how to read through phonics and guided reading strategies.I believe that every student learns in a unique way, just as each student is unique in their own way. Positive reinforcement and encouragement go a long way with elementary students and help motivate them to learn and grow to their full potential.

I have a B.S. in elementary education, two specializations in special education including dyslexia, and certifications in reading, math, social studies, and science all with honors from Texas Christian University. Later, I returned to TCU and earned a master's in general education, with honors, which gave me the flexibility to continue to develop exceptional reading strategies. In the first years of teaching special ed, my students were behind in so many classes, and they desperately needed to learn to read. The traditional process of teaching reading was not working to reach them. I researched available reading programs and began to see a need to develop my own based on Orton-Gillingham and Wilson reading principles and strategies. Over the years, I taught specific reading strategies for each of the reading skills, enabling students to experience exceptional success. I developed a multimodality phonetic component, coupled with cognitive mapping sound lists which enabled my students to double their fluency and therefore increase their comprehension. I trained parents so they could help their child at home and volunteers to supplement in the classroom. My comprehension strategies led to exceptional scores on the state standardized reading tests. We scored in the top 6% of Texas reading standardized test scores which was unprecedented for a low-income minority school. My students continually made two and sometimes three years of reading progress in a single year. Several classes won state reading awards, and I have received six Teacher of the Year Awards. I have been a reading specialist for 16 years. I have also taught general ed, gifted, dyslexic and ESL. I love to help students open their world to find the joy of reading. There are several strategies that set me apart from other teachers and enabled my special education students to progress enough to return to the general education classroom, my gifted students to make multiple years progress, and my general education students to earn multiple state reading awards: 1. I test every student over every foundational sound including the blends. I then remediate all missing sounds and monitor the students to ensure mastery is not lost. This is critical if our students are going to make exceptional progress. 2. I cognitively map all the critical phonetic rules using sound lists for each vowel and other sounds. This has helped my students double and triple their progress. 3. I directly teach all the vocabulary words in each story in each book. I write down every word my student misreads or doesn't know. I teach all those missing sight vocabulary words filling the gaps so they can continue to make unprecedented progress. Monitoring the development of their sight vocabulary almost always guarantees they will be great readers. I specialize and have had tremendous success in helping students who read one or more years below grade level catch up and even read above grade level. I ended my career teaching adults in the prisons. This was an easy transition since I had found opportunities to teach reading to adults at different times in my career.

Hello!I love exploring the wonderful world of writing and all its creativity and headaches (though I'd like to think with my help you will avoid the headaches). I am also a bit of a grammar Nazi and enjoy refreshing people's memories about grammar rules in order for people to read and better understand their meaning. Miscommunication is frustrating, and great writing that's clear and concise can prevent unnecessary frustration.

Any time someone asks me why I tutor I remember the worst teacher I ever had. She told me that because I was different, that I would never amount to anything, I would never graduate college, and I would never hold down a job. No student should ever have to hear this, much less believe it. As a result, I make it a point to help others that having trouble. As for the teacher in question, I made sure to send her an invitation when I graduated from TCU. Sometimes the best revenge is to prove someone wrong.As a person who is not too far removed from being a student himself, I am well aware of the difficulties that young people face today. Throughout my academic life, whether it was elementary, junior high, high school or college, I always had to work extra hard to make the grade. Some people can never touch a book and still make straight A's. I am definitely NOT that person. Even though I had to study a lot harder than most people to get good grades, I have something they don't: I actually remember what I learn!This is what makes me effective as a tutor. For one thing, I have ADD and this is something I have learned to use to my advantage. Before I learned coping skills in high school, I used to have to sit on the floor of my bathroom, clear everything off the counter tops and turn on the vent fan just to stay focused. It may sound crazy, but anything that distracted me even the slightest bit was a potential grade-killer. In order to be successful over the years, I had to develop strategies for effective learning. A lot of people will prepare for a test by "cramming" information in their brains, only to forget it as soon as they leave the classroom. That has never worked for me. I prefer to teach the same way that I learn-through applying the information and by having a thorough understanding of the subject matter.Just as a house that is built on sand will surely topple over, information that has no meaning or practical application in our daily lives will never be fully understood. When learning any subject you have to work from the ground up, starting with the basics and slowly building on them with more complex parts. To achieve this, I use mnemonic devices ("My Very Earthly Mother..."), analogies and metaphors and maybe a few flash cards thrown in for good measure. I find that these techniques teach the student in a way that simple memorization simply cannot do alone. By learning to associate visual images with the subject matter they represent one is able to better process the things they are reading and hearing.Finally, I help the student to learn effective organizational skills. I achieve this by teaching the student effective note taking skills, by helping them to become better organized and teaching them critical thinking skills through active participation. It all depends on what works for you. We are all wired a little differently-I know I am and I feel that I can help people who are having trouble. When it comes to learning, everybody is different. There is no right or wrong way to study it's all about what works for you.

My professional career took a detour one day when I was offered a position to teach at the Art Institute of Dallas. Having enjoyed the opportunity and success to teach and train employees over the years, I discovered a formal teaching position to be exciting, fun, and rewarding. Students did too, based on their feedback.I graduated from Texas Christian University with a BFA in Graphic Arts.Titles like Creative Director, Art Director, Graphics Manager, Copywriter, Designer, That Artsy Guy, followed after graduation.Having designed for international, national, regional, and local firms, my skills to discuss concept, design, layout, and technique are well versed.My strengths in production art developed my strengths in Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, and several other apps. Skills also include troubleshooting hardware and software issues; predominately Mac, but have experience on PC.Teaching creative, I have learned it is important to ask the right questions to prompt another's creativity. Hi! My name is Zina Yonten and I am currently taking the Fab-academy course out of Dassault Systemes in Waltham. I have a mechanical Engineering degree from TCU. During my undergraduate years, i tutored underclassmen precalculus and calculus 1 with 100% success rate. I also tutor economics since it was one of my favorite classes and i excelled in it. In my free time I play basketball.

I received my Bachelor of Arts in History from Trinity University in 2020. I earned my Master of Arts in History in May 2022 at Texas Christian University. Currently, I am a PhD student. Upon graduating, I hope to become a university professor and academic historian. During the school semester, I am also a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the History Department. This opportunity allows me to spend much time either working one-on-one with undergraduate students or in front of classrooms teaching history lessons. I enjoy discussing history and helping students see the ways it's more than dates and events. So much of history is being able to communicate your ideas and put together a solid argument for your interpretation of the past. Since everyone knows how history turns out, the classroom is somewhere to discuss or debate why events occurred. By association, writing is a passion of mine, and I spend much time doing it for my own grad courses and dissertation research.
