I was in my English class (Honors Short Story) on September 11, waiting for the class to start, when the television came on to news reports of an attack and we watched in horror coverage of the first tower engulfed in flames, and the second tower collapse.I remember being anxious about writing my first college essay in some ten years. It was a paper on Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher." Our instructions were to write a five-paragraph essay, with a minimum 10-sentence paragraphs. I was confused by this instruction, because we didn't learn the 5-paragraph essay in Montreal. I considered submitting a writing sample to see if I was up to the task. Eventually, I decided to take my chances and write the essay the best way I knew how.I could hardly breathe waiting for the professor to grade and return our papers. Finally, she called us one by one up to her desk, and she handed us our papers. I do not know what she said to the other students, but as she held out my paper, she motion to the desk and said, "You should be on this side of the desk," meaning the teacher side. That's all I needed to hear. I made sure to take every course that would make me the best teacher I could be.I studied year-round, and in December 2003, I graduated summa cum laude. I went on to take graduate courses in teaching reading, language arts, young adult fiction, pedagogy, and writing. I started teaching high school Language Arts and Reading in 2004-2005.While I tutor a range of subjects, I love writing. I have had an essay and a memoir published. I graduated with a degree in Sociology and a minor in Italian, and I've spent the past few years teaching both English as a Second Language and Italian. I am a graduate of Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. While my degree is in business, my career has centered on coding, mathematics, and mentoring others to learn and grow. I'm especially passionate about tutoring coding in Python, coding in the Unity Engine, math, American history, and game development. Professionally, I apply math and logic to develop complex calculations for tax software, giving me hands-on experience with real-world problem solving. "Knowledge is power"Science is my passion, when students draw connections between content and career applications, their learning is so much more impactful. My interest was piqued in a first grade science course. It was the only subject where asking questions was encouraged, and not challenged. In high school my curiosity deepened and led me to pursue a degree in Biology education.After graduating from Florida Atlantic University with my Bachelor of Science in Biology education, I became a middle school science teacher. Instead of teaching towards the State exam, I focused on teaching towards the standards. This enabled my students to see the relevance in their learning, through collaboration, creation and problem based learning with solar cars/solar ovens. Curiosity and the intrigue of learning prompted me to go down the "rabbit-hole" of STEM at the end of the tunnel, Robotics and a CS certification. The focus was on VEX,physical computing with Microbit, Arduino, sensors, JIMU and Piper computers, (Raspberry Pi).Students dived in with Scratch from MIT, creating their own stories and interactive games .tThey learned that computer science encapsulates so many industries from manufacturing to medical. The exploration of these content areas empowered them to become agents of change in society. The 8.5 year experiences gained in middle school catapulted me to High school as the Magnet and Vocational coordinator. Content connections are cultivated when collaboration and career application is mandated. These lines of discovery are interwoven into the fabric of the courses, because students need to see themselves as engineers, scientists , entrepreneurs and professionals today, to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

I enjoy helping students advance in their academic journey and in their career. I am passionate about health and have a PhD in Public Health from Florida International University, an MS in Dietetics and Nutrition from Florida International University, and a BSE in Exercise Science and Health Promotion from Florida Atlantic University. I have been working with undergraduate and graduate college students for about 6 years. I am also a Registered and Licensed Dietitian. I have provided tutoring for the credentialing exam for Registered Dietitians (RDs) and was the Program Director for an ACEND-accredited Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and Nutrition Program, which lead to the RD credential, for 3 years.I have expertise in the Microsoft Office Package including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. I am also an expert in Microsoft Outlook functions.I am enthusiastic about tutoring in the following subjects: nutrition, public health, exercise science, math, research fundamentals, and writing including thesis and dissertation writing and APA formatting and citations.My tutoring style is flexible. I enjoy meeting the student where they're at in terms of pacing and style of tutoring. For example, while some students appreciate hands on examples, others prefer demonstrations. Learning, studying, even IQ scores, are all skills that can be raised by doing. I can teach you how to study effectively, which is a skill they don't, but should, teach in elementary and high school. There is a system to it, and anyone can learn how to study effectively.

I am a graduate of Florida Atlantic University where I earned a degree in Secondary English Education with a certification in English (6-12) with ESOL Endorsement (FL). Since graduating, I have taught Language Arts in South Florida at the middle school level to students of varied learning needs. Upon moving to New York, I became certified in English Language Arts in order to continue my passion for education. My approach to teaching and tutoring is to guide students toward discovery and passion for learning by giving them support and encouragement that allows them to feel confident in their pursuit of knowledge. Although I enjoy tutoring all things Language Arts, I most enjoy helping students with their reading comprehension and writing skills. Once a love and understanding of reading is developed, learning seems to become second nature. Writing is also a key component to academic success, as it allows a student to confidently express his/her thoughts and ideas. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking vegetarian cuisine, taking my dog to the park, and of course, reading!
