I am a graduate of East Carolina University: Bachelor's of Science in Biology and concentration in Cell and Molecular Biology. While at ECU, I have enjoyed being a Teaching Assistant in lecture as well as lab, and a Student Athlete Tutor. These jobs have allowed me to discover how much I enjoy teaching and tutoring - and have given me a comprehensive understanding of many subjects at the college level. My strengths and passions when tutoring lie in General Biology, General Chemistry, Cell and Developmental Biology, and especially Genetics. I plan to pursue a Master's and career path in Genetic Counseling - it is my biggest passion in life. While tutoring, my highest priorities are student engagement and understanding. I like to let you lead the session so that we can make the most out of our time together and focus on what you are struggling with. My strengths lie in adaptability, real-world relatedness, collaboration, and passion while still encouraging comprehensive understanding.

Twentieth-century author Flannery O'Connor left behind two novels, thirty-two short stories, numerous essays, and one frequently-quoted observation: "I write so that I know what I'm thinking." In a similarly self-reflective spirit, I have come to believe that I teach so that I know what I have learned, and how I have learned it. During my first semester as a graduate student, my concentration within the English major was creative writing. In my second semester, I migrated to technical writing. My exposure to both disciplines has given me a great appreciation for all phases of the writing process, from the beautiful chaos of creation to the process of imposing order on what you have created: proofreading, header style definition, and everything else that makes a document look as though it had been as easy to write as it is to read. I've heard many students state plainly that they did not know how to write. I believe the first duty of a composition instructor is to prove two things to students: that they do know how to write, and that writing can be a rewarding means of self-expression, as opposed to the exercise in drudgery that students so often think it is. What I have found, in teaching both English and math, is that assignments should not simply be explained and repeated until the students catch on. Rather, the instructor should look for engaging illustrations of the concepts that underlie those assignments, so that they are easier to understand and more enjoyable to complete.

I received two Bachelor's degrees from East Carolina University: one in English and the other in Political Science. I received a certificate in Technical and Professional Communication. I also attended ECU for graduate school; I received a Master of Arts in English with a concentration in both creative and technical writing. When I wasn't writing poetry and nonfiction essays, I was concentrating on technical editing and grammar. While I graduate school, I had the opportunity to tutor student-athletes in English courses including literature and composition. I have taught and supported students in various English-related subjects to include but not limited to: composition, creative writing, business writing, technical writing, research and citing, oral presentations, social media, and graphic design, etc.My teaching experience has spanned across two-year community colleges and four-year HBCUs. I have taught in a higher education setting for nearly 10 years. From traditional students to veterans, I have experience teaching and supporting a vast array of students with a vast array of backgrounds. I feel strongly about teaching each student where they are respectively and individually. I am very keen on researching and citing, as I worked in university libraries for many years. I am guided by a learner-centered approach. I think it is important to meet students' needs and develop their interests and values. I believe that learning is an individual process of making sense of a student's experiences and beliefs. My approach to teaching is to organize my courses into a series of key topics and spend time preparing clear lectures on each, as well as fostering engagement through discussions. I tend to guide students to think as professionals, as opposed to beginners.

After working for six years as a Systems Engineer with the Department of Defense, I recently decided to switch careers in order to pursue a calling in Medicine. This decision required a return to academia to complete a litany of core science classes required for medical school. Having recently completed these requirements, I would be thrilled to assist students in their journey through these subjects. With the new MCAT format heavily emphasizing Biochemistry, I feel confident that I can help students achieve their maximum potential, having personally scored in the 99th percentile in the Biological and Biochemical Foundations section.

I am passionate to help students of all types and situations, to be more successful in a challenging topic like chemistry to accomplish their aspirational goals. Too many students are not given a proper opportunity by not having an instructor who is interested in them and wants the best for them.I have a Bachelor's (BS) in Biochemistry, and a Masters' (M.S.) and Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Chemistry. I have been teaching and tutoring for almost 20 years as an undergraduate student, graduate student, and now a full-time chemistry instructor and have tutored and taught High School students, University-level students, Community College students, military, returning adult learners, you name it, I've probably have taught it.I most enjoy General, Organic, and Biochemistry topics. I teach in a "I do, We do, You do" philosophy where we work through a problem together and then you attempt it. Chemistry, as most math and science courses, is best learned by doing rather than watching and having a professor tell you instead of discussing it with you.

This tutor earned three degrees over the course of her career-- first she earned a BS degree in secondary English education from East Carolina University, with which she taught high school English for two years before returning to graduate school at her alma mater, ECU, where she then earned a Master's degree in technical and professional communication (English department), with which she contracted in industry with the IRS, HUD, and then ATF while earning her Ph.D. in African American literature, which was earned on full scholarship at Howard University. After teaching 16 years in the university setting, this tutor married and had two daughters and then joined them in the public school system, teaching at her older daughter's high school where her daughter graduated in 2022. This tutor is currently teaching in an alternative school setting, helping students who have fallen behind in academics, teaching in an accelerated academic program. This tutor tutors in reading, writing, grammar, and style. This tutor has always loved English and earned three degrees in English due to her love for reading and writing poetry, with which she published an award-winning collection based on the topic of her dissertation, William E. B. Du Bois, entitled: BROAD SYMPATHIES IN A NARROW WORLD: THE LEGACY OF W. E. B. DU BOIS. Concerning her teaching philosophy and tutoring style, her method of teaching is constructivist, which follows in the path of Dewey, Piaget, Vigotsky, and others. She avoids some kind of knowledge "out there" independent of the learner, especially in reference to poetry. She believes that the value in education is learning to think for oneself, to think critically. She avoids an authoritarian approach to teaching and seeks reflective activity, as Dewey terms it. She endeavors to be progressive and uses poetry in her classes to engage students to think about the process of composing, for the language of poetry is highly structured and condensed, and reading it effectively trains students to reflect analytically as well as critically. Outside of academia, she enjoys long walks for exercise with sprints of running when her body cooperates. She would like to return to her love for bicycling and swimming. Most of all, she loves teaching and seeing the light bulbs turn on when students finally understand complicated concepts. She currently takes classes at the local university to strengthen her teaching skills, as required by the state of Alabama and the Alabama reading initiative. She always endeavors to be the best teacher that she can be, for teaching is what she feels called to do.
