If you have a student who is seeking acceptance into a private or independent school, they may be preparing to complete an entrance exam like the ISEE. Luckily, Varsity Tutors has an online Syracuse ISEE prep course that can help them improve and gain confidence in their test-taking abilities. Through an interactive, online course, your student can learn study-tips and strategies alongside their peers.
Students will complete the ISEE on the level that corresponds to their current grade level. The Primary Level is broken down into three sub-categories: Primary 2, Primary 3, and Primary 4. The Primary 2 students are entering the second grade, the Primary 3 students are entering the third grade, and the Primary 4 students are entering the fourth grade the following school year. These younger students will have a different testing structure than the other three levels. Primary-Level students will have three sections to complete on their version of the ISEE: Math, Reading, and Writing. Students who test at the Primary 2 Level will also need to complete a seven-minute Auditory Comprehension segment.
The ISEE exam includes five different test sections for the Upper, Middle, and Lower-Level. The sections that will appear on the exam are Essay, Math Achievement, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Verbal Reasoning. Each section of the test is timed and includes a set number of questions that remain consistent across all three testing levels.
What materials are covered in a Syracuse ISEE class?
The Essay section has almost the same format among each testing level. Students are given a prompt and are required to write a story or essay in response to the prompt. The prompts will be written for the Upper, Middle, and Lower Levels, whereas the prompt is provided for Primary Level students through a picture. Your student will need to demonstrate their writing and organizational abilities as well as showcase their personality and creativity throughout their written work. Another difference between the Primary Level test structure and the other three exams is the Writing section is not scored for Primary Level students.
The Math Achievement and Quantitative Reasoning are both sections that focus on math-related material and will test Middle and Upper-Level students on problem-solving, data analysis, algebra, and geometry. Students taking the Upper Level would also benefit from knowing how to work with exponents, quadrilaterals, and triangles. The Middle Level students must show their ability to work with percents, decimals, fractions, and their understanding of a Venn Diagram. Lower Level students should be familiar with number logic comparison, and whole numbers. Primary Level students will respond to their Math section of the ISEE in multiple-choice format and questions will pertain to their knowledge of basic mathematical skills at their appropriate grade-level.
The Reading Comprehension portion of the exam will measure your student's reading skills and understanding of the English language. Upper Level students must be able to identify the author's intent, reflect their understanding of cause and effect, and show proficiency in identifying the elements between different literary genres. Middle Level students will have to demonstrate their knowledge of figurative and literal language use. Students completing Lower Level will have to answer questions meant to evaluate their understanding of main ideas, tone, style, and their ability to locate relevant information in written passages. The Reading section of the Primary Level ISEE is will measure the student's knowledge of grade-appropriate vocabulary words and phrases.
Similar to the Reading Comprehension section, Verbal Reasoning also assesses English skills. Upper Level students will be asked to prove their understanding of synonyms, context clues, prefixes, and suffixes while showing that they can properly complete sentences. Middle Level students will encounter questions that reference Greek, Latin, and Anglo Saxon language to determine the meaning of words. The Lower Level students will be required to use context clues and complete sentences. Students testing on all levels will face questions that pertain to grade-appropriate vocabulary. Primary Level students do not have to complete a Verbal Reasoning section.
What are the benefits of an online Syracuse ISEE course?
There are many benefits of an online Syracuse ISEE course. One advantage of the course is accessibility. Your student will work alongside other students with the same educational goal in a virtual classroom. The online learning environment makes it easy for your student to attend class in whichever learning environment they are most comfortable because all they will need is a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a dependable internet connection. Are you worried that you won't have time to drive your child to another scheduled activity each week? Well, not to worry. Through our online course, your student can improve their testing abilities without ever having to leave your house.
While they will not need to be physically present for this course, your student will not have to work through the course material on their own. In addition to the information that will be presented by their highly-qualified instructor, your student will be able to directly interact with their fellow classmates to share ideas and work through portions of the exam that they find most difficult. The instructors may even encourage these interactions further through the help of group activities.
Another benefit of the Syracuse ISEE course is that it is flexible enough to fit into nearly every student's schedule, no matter how busy that schedule might be. New ISEE courses begin every week and are offered in 2-week and 4-week durations. Perhaps they have more time to study on the weekend. Luckily, courses are available during both weekdays and on the weekend, so you can pick the course that works best for your student.
