How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

The SSAT, or Secondary School Admissions Test, evaluates students' reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, writing, and quantitative capabilities. It is used as the primary tool to determine admittance into many private schools. If your student is aiming to get into an elite private school, they need to get a good score on this exam. SSAT tutors in Chicago, Illinois, can help your child prepare for the exam.

The exam is given one time each month from October until April, and then it is also given once in June. There are three levels of the SSAT: elementary, middle, and upper. For the elementary level, students are given one hour and fifty minutes. It consists of multiple choice questions and is given to third and fourth graders. The middle level gives students three hours and five minutes and is also multiple choice. It is given to students in grades five through seven. The last level, the upper, is also taken in three hours and five minutes and is multiple choice. The upper is the level given in eighth grade and higher. No matter which level of the exam your student is about to tackle, Chicago SSAT tutoring can help them prepare for it.

SSAT Tutoring review by Danielle in Chicago, IL
During this session we focused mainly on math. We reviewed concepts that she had already learned such as averages, area, percentages, and algebraic equations as we did a number of practice problems.

SSAT Tutoring review by Michael in Chicago, IL
Continued to quiz the student on his SSAT vocab flash cards. We are about 2/3 done with the stack of 500 words. Worked on another math section from the textbook. He is improving on problems that involve fractions and percents, but will need to improve his accuracy on word problems by showing a little more work. The student is very bright and has a tendency of doing the majority of computations mentally, so I'm encouraging him to take his time and be more precise with pencil and paper.

SSAT Tutoring review by Alyssa in Chicago, IL
We spent most of the session going over the questions the student missed on his full-length exam. Many missed answers were due to simple errors, so I reminded him that he can improve his score simply by taking his time. We rounded out the remaining hour with a reading comprehension drill, which went much smoother than last week!

SSAT Tutoring review by Benjamin in Chicago, IL
Today the student and I went over the math he missed on last week's practice exam and we took a practice exam in the verbal section. He scored incredibly well in the verbal section and from here on I think he will do the majority of the studying for verbal on his own as he seems to have no problem with that content. Math seems to be a difficult area for him and the one that will be the emphasis of our sessions continuing forward.

SSAT Tutoring review by Rebekah in Chicago, IL
This student is a bright girl. We are focusing on content for now and then will move into test-taking strategies. She seems to have a solid foundation. We will focus on fractions and decimals next week. As she feels more comfortable with the content and format of the test, we will work on timed practice so she doesn't feel rushed when test day arrives.

SSAT Tutoring review by Abbi in Chicago, IL
For our first session, I talked the student through the parts of the test and each of the sections. Then I had her do some practice questions from each part of the text. We went through the answers and reviewed the questions she had trouble with. I started a list of vocabulary to work on and review as well as a list of some material from the math section to focus on. I also reviewed an essay that she wrote previously and we will review some essay strategies and writing next session.
