Varsity Tutors can help set up Salt Lake City SAT prep for high school students who are thinking about the college application process. Even if graduation is a few years off, it's common for a high school student to consider whether college is in their future. You may also be weighing the pros and cons of the different entrance exams and deciding which entrance exam you want to take.
Salt Lake City high school students, including those who attend Rowland Hall or Skyline High School, often choose the SAT. That college entrance exam includes Writing and Language, Reading, and Math sections, as well as an optional Essay section. Score ranges for Math, Reading, and Writing and Language start at 400 and go as high as 1600. The Reading section and the Writing and Language section are combined for a total score between 200-800 points. The Essay section has a scoring range between 6 and 24 points. If you're looking for ways to increase your understanding of the concepts covered on the SAT, you may want to consider studying with a group in a Salt Lake City SAT prep class, or studying with a Salt Lake City SAT tutor.
What can I expect from Salt Lake City SAT prep?
The SAT exam is approximately three hours unless you opt to take the Essay section. In that case, you'll have an additional 50 minutes added to your test time. The three main sections (Reading, Math, and Writing and Language) are comprised of multiple choice questions, and it's important to know that your score is tabulated from the number of answers you get right. There's no penalty for guessing, and no points taken away for wrong answers. It's important to answer as many questions as possible when you sit down to take the test, because that gives you an opportunity to increase your score, on all of the included sections.
The Writing and Language test examines your basic skills in written English, like your use of grammar and sentence structure, for example. These questions are also designed to assess your ability to use contextual clues to gain meaning in a passage and to determine how well you can discern whether or not there are opportunities to rework passages to make claims stronger or more relevant.
In the Reading section, you'll be asked to read and analyze written passages from multiple sources: historical documents, literature, social science, and up to three different passages related to science. The Reading test requires that you read and assess written passages from a variety of sources. There are 52 questions. This section tells admissions boards how well you can use evidence and context to determine meaning and provide analysis after reading a given passage.
The Math section examines your mathematical fluency, including how quickly you can identify solutions. It also tests your ability to connect the properties of linear equations and their graphs and how well you show your understanding of math in general. You'll also be asked to analyze a situation and find the pieces to solve the problem before creating a mathematical equation and solving it.
The optional Essay asks you to read a passage and analyze how the author supports their claims. You will want to pay attention to the evidence they use, how they use persuasion and style, and reasoning in developing a strong idea. You'll be asked to evaluate their argument and use examples of those elements listed above to critique that argument. You will not be asked for your opinion.
What are the benefits of Salt Lake City SAT prep?
There are two ways you can get some help as you study. The two methods of instruction are Salt Lake City SAT prep class delivered via the internet or working with an academic coach in private one-on-one sessions.
An online Salt Lake City SAT prep class puts you right in the classroom with everyone, including your instructor. Classes last two or four weeks, so you don't have to worry about spending long hours in a classroom when you have a busy schedule. New classes start each week, and there are benefits to working with other students, instead of working alone. For one thing, you might feel less stress about the exam if you know you're not the only one who struggles with concepts in the math section, for example. You'll be able to bounce ideas off of each other, and get insights that you may not have considered when you've studied alone.
If you're a student who is more comfortable with one-on-one prep sessions from a Salt Lake City SAT tutor, there's an opportunity for customization that you can't get in a group setting. Starting at the first meeting, your instructor gets to know you and how you learn best. They'll craft a study plan that addresses your academic strengths and areas of opportunity as well as your personality. You can connect with your tutor online, or you can meet in-person at a location you've agreed on ahead of time. During your appointments, your instructor will be able to rearrange the topics when needed, and spend more time on more difficult concepts. They'll still highlight the concepts you have a stronger grasp of, sprinkling that information throughout the different sessions.

...is to help students become independent, comfortable, and confident in the fields they are studying. I love helping people get to the "aha" moment when they really understand what's being taught. In my experience, one of the most important parts of tutoring is setting clear expectations at the beginning and working toward a common goal. Given the right goals and assistance, I truly believe that anyone can master any of the subjects I teach.
