What does a Salt Lake City SAT class cover?
Everything detailed in a Salt Lake City SAT class is in an effort to provide you with the knowledge, understanding, and skills necessary to maximize your possible success. Each class has a qualified instructor that guides you through a study syllabus in a format similar to a live classroom session. You can expect to go over a basic overview of the structure of the test and the testing process, as well as the scoring system. By learning about the types of questions you will be asked you can reduce your chances of becoming lost in and confused by the material. The SAT is comprised of 3 required sections and 1 optional essay. You are tested in Math with a score range of 200 to 800 points as well as Reading and Writing & Language with a combined score range of 200 to 800 points.
The Math section is divided into two parts, one using a calculator and the other without. Students are given 25 minutes to answer 15 multiple choice questions and 5 grid-ins with no calculator. The second part contains 30 multiple choice questions and 8 grid-ins that must be answered in 55 minutes with the aid of a calculator. Here you should be able to show how well you understand and interpret the data presented in the Math section. It evaluates your competence in three essential areas: heart of algebra, problem-solving & data analysis, and passport to advanced math. Heart of algebra gives you questions where you must solve problems that involve linear equations and systems. The passport to advanced math is concerned with showcasing your ability to understand the structure of expressions and then analyze, manipulate, and rewrite those expressions.
In the Reading section, you are given several passages from a wide range of subjects, and you have 65 minutes to answer 52 questions. These questions will ask you to demonstrate a command of the evidence presented. Can you identify the key areas that support answers and a basis for a sound conclusion? Can you analyze historical or scientific material and then draw accurate conclusions? You will also need to show that you understand how an argument is presented by using context clues to help you understand word choice and their relationship to the evidence.
The Writing & Language section is made up of 44 multiple choice questions. Some of these questions will contain tables, graphs, or charts. All questions come from the provided material and you have 35 minutes to complete this portion. You will be asked to detail the passages, organization, and impact as well as point out additions that could be made to improve the given piece. Here you are evaluated on your ability to apply accurate changes to sentence structure, word usage, or argument claims that enhance and clarify the passages.
After completing these required sections you will encounter the optional SAT essay. Here there is a single question and you are given only one excerpt to read. While reading the passage you should be focused on understanding the author's use of facts to support their claim as well as noting any stylistic elements that influence the author's reasoning. Then you are required to write a response essay that assesses the author's argument. The essay should cite the evidence presented in the argument that develops the ideas presented and connect the claims made. You are given 50 minutes to complete this portion and the scoring range is 6 to 24 points.

...primary goal is to help students become independent, comfortable, and confident in the fields they are studying. I love helping people get to the "aha" moment when they really understand what's being taught. In my experience, one of the most important parts of tutoring is setting clear expectations at the beginning and working toward a common goal. Given the right goals and assistance, I truly believe that anyone can master any of the subjects I...

...will start graduate school in the fall, with the eventual goal of teaching physics in a college setting. Beyond the world of teaching, I love volleyball and the outdoors. Hiking, camping, backpacking, being outside energizes my soul. Volleyball is my sport, and I love teaching the basics to people, but I enjoy practically all sports, despite my pitiable attempts at soccer. Playing guitar, listening to music, and reading books also brighten my life.... I believe strongly that asking questions is important to learning. Ben: Salt Lake City SAT course instructor
My name is Ben. I struggled as middle school student mostly because I had a hard time focusing. I became an educator to help kids like me learn about the amazing world we live in. I have taught middle school geology and literacy. I have a background in chemistry, physics, political science and math up to calculus 1.... The world is a fascinating place, and it enriches our lives to learn more interesting things every day. Learning is hardest (for me at least) when we have not yet seen how the material is relevant or interesting. When I teach, I try to make the material as accessible and relevant as possible to the student. When students need to struggle a little bit to learn material, the understanding is much deeper.

...and math problems it all starts with the same steps: A) What do I know? B) What do I want to know? C) How do I get from A to B? I did PhD research in computational chemistry and dream of becoming a middle school math teacher if I win the lottery. PS - My online sessions will frequently be monitored by my chihuahua, Piper. She's quiet, but expect a pop-by :)... Students learn best by doing problems and talking through their process. I like to have a student talk me through what they understand so we can correct any flaws in background knowledge, as well as build a scaffold to solve future problems.
