If you are looking for a way to maximize your student's Raleigh-Durham ISEE prep, Varsity Tutors can set them up with services that meet their needs. In addition to providing effective instruction, these services are easy and convenient to schedule. In a competitive academic environment, every advantage counts. Because many Independent Schools consider the ISEE during the application process, helping your student to prepare for these exams can make a difference in their academic career.
The ISEE is actually a series of exams that assess the abilities of students of a variety of ages. The Primary Level ISEE contains three exams (2, 3, and 4) for students about to enter those grades. The Lower Level is for 5th and 6th-grade students, the Middle Level for 7th and 8th-grade students, and the Upper Level for students entering 9th grade or older. The three highest levels share format, time constraints, number of questions, and layout. The Primary Level ISEE is shorter and suited to the particular needs of younger students.
What can my student learn about during Raleigh-Durham ISEE prep?
The Primary Level ISEE contains three main sections which are Reading, Math, and a Writing Sample. The Primary Level 2 exam also has an Auditory Comprehension section. The three highest ISEE levels feature five sections which are Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Math Achievement, and the Essay section. Though these five sections share a format, the exams for different ages feature different challenges and test different skills. Let's do a brief overview of the components of the sections in the three highest-level exams.
The Verbal Reasoning section consists of 40 questions that are based on sentence completion and synonyms. Students will have 20 minutes to complete this section. For each exam, students must understand vocabulary words that are suitable for their particular age. Those in the Middle and Upper Levels must have a knowledge of word roots, prefixes and suffixes, and parts of speech. All levels feature questions that require using context clues to complete a sentence.
During the Quantitative Reasoning section, students will have 35 minutes to complete 37 questions related to mathematical reasoning. This section is more focused on effective mathematical thinking than on using mathematical operations, but students must still effectively find the area and perimeter of shapes, use the four basic functions, and work with variables. This section tests a student's understanding of algebraic and geometric properties, as well as data analysis and problem-solving.
In the Reading Comprehension section, students will answer questions based on passages that appear on the exam. In the 36 questions, students will display their understanding of the author's intent, their ability to identify main and supporting ideas, and their analysis of the structure of a piece. Students will need to use inferences to learn information that does not appear explicitly in the text, identify relationships, and understand figurative and literal language. Students will have 35 minutes to complete this section.
The Math Achievement section is more focused on executing the specific mathematical operations needed to solve a problem. There are 47 questions in this section and they require students to solve word problems, work with variables and exponents, work with factors, and understand the proper order of operations. There are 40 minutes allocated to complete this section of the exam.
During the Essay section, students will have half an hour to respond to a prompt. This section is a chance for students to share a bit more about themselves and display their writing abilities. Students will need to effectively use details, writing with effective structure and organization, and writing compellingly and interestingly.
What can Raleigh-Durham ISEE prep do to help my student get ready for the exam?
There are two main options for your student's Raleigh-Durham ISEE prep. If your student learns best in a group environment, they can join a Raleigh-Durham ISEE prep course and work with a skilled instructor and other students who are preparing for the same exam. On the other hand, if your student would learn best in a one-on-one situation, they can work with a Raleigh-Durham ISEE tutor. Both of these options take place online which makes scheduling easier and removes the need to commute.
In a Raleigh-Durham ISEE prep class, your student can hear live lectures, ask questions, and be a part of class discussions in a live virtual classroom. The interactions that take place in these classrooms allow your student to encounter the material in a variety of ways and hear different perspectives that broaden their understanding of the topics on the ISEE. The instructor can tailor the sessions to the needs of the whole group, and you can find a time for your student to meet with the instructor outside of class time if they need extra help. Sessions last for two or four weeks, and new sessions start weekly.
If your student works with a Raleigh-Durham ISEE tutor, their mentor can develop a study plan based on your student's goals, abilities, and learning style. By personalizing your student's learning in this way, they can focus on the material that is most important for them and learn in ways that help them to absorb and process information best. In addition to learning about the content of the exam, your student can work with their academic mentor to prepare test-taking strategies that are suited to the demands of the exam. The skills and habits your student learns in these sessions can increase both their skills and their confidence as they approach the exam.
