If you are a high school student who is thinking of taking the ACT, Varsity Tutors can assist you in your preparation by helping you find a Pittsburgh ACT course. You may not feel the need to think about college now, but most students start their college admissions process around their junior year of high school. Before you apply to colleges, you will need to take a college admissions exam, like the ACT. Many high school students, like those that attend Central Catholic High School or Allderdice High School, will take the ACT as their exam of choice. The score you receive on the ACT will most likely play a role in the school or schools you get accepted into.
The ACT has five sections. No matter how far along you are in preparing for exam day, you may be wondering how to make the most out of your study time and materials. If you would like extra help studying and more resources, a Pittsburgh ACT course could be a great way for you to boost your study habits. We can connect you to a Pittsburgh ACT course quickly to start this process.
What will my Pittsburgh ACT course cover?
The ACT has four sections that are required. The sections are Math, Reading, English, and Science. There is one more section that is optional, and that is the Writing section. You are given 2 hours and 55 minutes to complete the test if you do not take the Writing section. If you choose to do the Writing section, you will be given 3 hours and 35 minutes to complete the exam. An ACT course can cover all of these sections. Let's go over each section so you are more familiar with the content and concepts.
The first section is Math. In the Math section, you will answer 60 questions in an hour. The questions are multiple choice and ask you to access skills and information you have learned in math classes up to the 12th grade. You will have to work with great accuracy and speed on these questions as you only have one minute per question. Also, make sure to bring an appropriate calculator to use on this section.
The next section is Reading. You will have 30 minutes to answer 40 questions. The answers will be based on passages that you will have to read. You will answer questions on the passages' central ideas and themes, summarize ideas, and show understanding between different types of relationships. You will also demonstrate your knowledge of word and phrase meanings, facts and opinions, and make connections between different texts. You will once again need to use your time wisely as not much time is given for this section.
English is the next section. You will be allowed 45 minutes to answer 75 questions. Like the Reading section, you will be answering questions based on passages. This time, questions are on grammar, structure, punctuation, style, and tone. You will have to decide when text needs to be revised and when it does not. Some questions will be on the text as a whole, and others will be on a few sentences or words.
The last required section is Science. You have to answer 40 multiple choice questions within 35 minutes. You will be tested on your skills to manipulate and analyze scientific data presented in various formats. This section also texts your knowledge in the scientific method and designs of scientific investigation and experimentation. The sciences you will be tested on are physics, chemistry, biology, and Earth and space sciences.
The optional section is Writing. This section is 40 minutes long. For this section, you will choose one topic to discuss in your essay. This essay should demonstrate clear reasoning and ideas, along with being well-written. It should also show your confidence in writing English. The Writing section is done on paper, so make sure to bring extra #2 pencils.
The ACT is a very popular exam for people looking to go on to college. In the United States, there are six dates for testing in a year. All of the tests start at 8 AM. If you decide to take the Writing section, you will be dismissed from the exam at 1:35 PM. If you do not do the Writing section, you will be done at 12:35 PM. Always make sure to answer all questions. There is never a penalty for guessing!

My goal is to not only teach students their respective subjects, but to provide them with a set of problem solving skills that will help them break down challenging material independently in the future. ... To ensure students find the best way to learn material so that the subject is no longer such a daunting task.... Introduce myself, get information about the course, such as their past performance and what areas they need improvement on if they are aware, and try to understand their instructor's teaching methods. I would then use this information to develop a plan for the student.

...of written grammar and the "open-ended" rules of content organization. To learn to write, a student must learn to express ideas, and in this setting, tutors and students can truly get to know each other. The most effective learning comes after we make learning enjoyable. That takes effort from both the teacher and the student. The teacher should come to the table with a good method and the creativity to break from the method from...
